Yeah you've gotta do more with it than sound exactly the same, to me Burial's only truly interesting when you know where the beats and inspiration comes from. Listen to Photek, Omni Trio, El-B. It's amazing how much Burial takes from them and still twists it into his own.

Anyway, I've been on the 2-step tip for the past few weeks. I really enjoy the pace those drums give the music, and I'm quite evidently inspired by Burial in a lot of ways. Just wondering if you guys think I differentiate myself enough:

They're remixes 'cause I just felt like twisting some songs I liked around to things I could use in my sets.

I recommend you check out Clubroot. If ever there was something I'd call ambient dubstep it would be his work. You'll have quite a time downloading it, so I recommend just buying it.

I've done the same for a long time (though not in 96), but still i've always loved crackle, mostly because one of the things I love doing is cratedigging & sampling vinyl, and usually I don't clean it up I just use it like it is because the sound is great, it sounds alive. I was always into sampling weird shit too away from the studio (SP202 anyone? lol)... but I don't think people would shout copycat for just something like that. If it was paired up with unquantized skitty 2step beats, ambient melancholy pads, and weird shifted vocals, then yeah I can see that.

But also, without "copying" (to use the term loosely), no music genre would exist as it wouldn't have the opportunity to thrive and evolve. Like dubstep, someone started making it and someone else liked it and "copied" it, and so on.. until you have a whole genre, with people who took the original style they liked and created their own version that made it so diverse in the end. Making it your own is important though, a straight carbon copy doesn't work and it seems a bit like tsecni.

I hate this whole notion that you have to like..."make your mark" on the world of music in order to be a respectable musician. That attitude is retarded. Roqqert's music is heavily influenced by Burial, but I wouldn't say it's derivative to a fault.

And then the cover band "learns" what makes those tracks tick, they learn how to play and start messing with their own tunes. And then after a few years they're in the charts with tracks that you can hear the status quo influence in, but are clearly new and fresh.

Going in guns blazing on everyone who sounds remotely like burial ("oh my god, he shifted a vocal up an octave,..., wanker") is hardly constructive. Just enjoy good music man.

I think the rain samples under a filtered 2step beat is like Burials trademark sound. But people should not be put off making atmospheric beats at all!

We have our fair share of people selling artist impressions here in London too.

Roqqert was called up on this sounding like burial thing time ago - and it was totally unnessecery - way b4 any other burial sounding producers reared their heads

Sure it had a similar feel but there are a lot of Burialesq producers out there and their tunes just don't 'grab' me - despite the fact that they really should do because they use a sound pallete im into heavily

regardless of genre - some producers tunes just have 'something about them' that is beneath the surface - even if it's just a 4 bar loop - you can just tell - but you cant quite put your finger on it. Roqqert is one of these producers as far as Im concerned

Badman by Kryptic Minds is a prime example - if you break it down - its as generic as wobble comes if you ask me - but there is something about that tune that just delivers a knockout blow which trancends it's production values.

Fully in agreement with Whineo here....... This is a fucking awesome tune. I dont even know why I like it. Its weird...... the percs in the intro sound like someone bashing pots and pans together, the sample (whilst cool) is not exactly brilliant or original in any way, and yet...................... I cant get the bloody thing off my stereo!!

Its not like Im even a Kryptic Minds/Leon Switch fan of old. I loathed their drum and bass productions. Truly loathed them (although I understand Im in the minority) and had to be forced to listen to the dubstep stuff by some mates.

The new album will be out soon. I cant fucking wait.
