Great thread - pretty much where my head's at right now, production wise.
Broken Beat and dubstep make quite good bedfellows - that intense, hip-damaging swing you get in the best broken beat is complementary to dubstep's loaded, swinging subs. We could do with more of mixes of the two. Benga for example is good at mixing the two styles, Broken Dubstep being the obvious example, and it's superb, but there's also Comb Sixties. Plus there's Boxcutter's Sunshine, a really good cut-up of Everybody Loves the Sunshine. Obviously there's Blue Notez - and Mala tells me he did a Miles Davis refix a while back which he's never cut.
Speaking of Miles, some of you have already heard
Billy Preston Dub, a refix of seventies Miles from the Get Up With It album that Bill Laswell remixed on Panthalassa, on Selector Dub-U's show. It pushes the definition of dubstep a bit - same sub-bass, but different rhythms. It's here:
http://www.grievousangel.net/Audio/BillyPrestonDub.mp3.
And I've just done
We Want Miles, a more conventional dubstep roller that's built around broken-down samples of the same tune. It's here:
http://www.grievousangel.net/Audio/Grie ... tMiles.mp3.
I think these tracks show you don't have to do straight up broken beat rhythms or conventional jazz instrumentation to use that flavour in dubstep.

It's all about some Miles
I've only got 2 of his albums ("Birth of The Cool" and "Sorcerer")... serious room for expansion.

Never would have realised in a million years that Boxcutter's Sunshine is influenced by the Roy Ayers joint, and Roy Ayers is my only real knowledge of the 70's sound that you can tell some of the broken boys today are influenced by.
Incidentally Everyone Loves the Sunshine was a favourite of Zed Bias

If Baz says that the boxcutter- 'sunshine' tune has nothing to do with the Roy Ayers track... well it wouldn't surprise me in the slightest.
As for the whole 'west london' broken beat scene. How the fuck did things become this parochial (although by and large I think this moniker has fallen into disuse) in London? After all, the biggest broken night is in the east

west london has a 'music scene'? (other then the one which is repped by 14 yr olds playing there instruments badly)

Can anyone tell me what the dubstep track (I think a reasonably old one) is that samples Miles Davis' "Concierto de aranjuez (adagio)"?

you can c I'm trying to forge some sort of uk hybrid between dubstep,d&b,techno, electro & elements of broken.....boogie freakz & ghetto salsa on my new cd are kinda the best showcases for that so far but it's something I haven't heard anyone else doing & am going to try & push further for the next decade or so.

Heh.. yeah. Pretty much agree. Although ideally i'd like to see minimal techno/house share a venue with dubstep.. could be Dubstep has stagnated too much though lately to put up much for interest the mnml headz

I dunno about "fluffy", but dubstep defenetly needs a more jazzy flavor. Thow some horns in there and some jazzy drum sounds. The girl from codine city by L-Wiz is the direction I'm talking about.
by the way, could someone point a very interested party tword someplace to download some brokenbeat/Nu Jazz mixes? please? I'm looking in the direction of the thread starter....
