I've checked out ALOT of monitors over the last little while.

I'm put myself on a $600 budget with the intention of getting a monitor that would give me visibility to the low end. I have RP5s currently, which are great but put out no bass.

I went and listened to some monitors and read a bunch of reviews. I ended up coming home with the Tapco S8s ($600 canadian) primarily due to the extended bass response, but after using them for a while I realized that I did not much care for them. The sound is hollow, far away, and difficult to 'see' into, although the bass response was very useful and helped me identify some problems with my mixes. I found I often used both monitors at the same time (rp5s and tapcos) the rp5s were clearly better at producing mid and high range frequency.

I ended up taking the tapcos back and buying Mackie HR824 MKIIs ($1600), which have significantly better image, a bright smooth sound (although a bit brash in the highs next to the silk dome on the KRKs due to titanium tweeter).

Some monitors that I would REALLY recommend - especially if you're not concerned about low end response:

Adam 7A ($1200): These have the ADAM ART ribbon tweeter. They're so incredible. You can really see into the sound. These are very very impressive. Decent bass response with the 6.7" woofer - down to 47hz I believe, which is good for a woofer that size. The bass image is only moderate quality, but the mids and highs are INCREDIBLE.

Samson rubicon 6A ($600): These are my top pic for a third pair of monitors. Also have ribbon tweeters (although a more classic design then the Adam ART tweeters). Great mids and highs, huge image very easy to 'see' into. The bass response is reasonable, but dwindles very very noticably and quickly. you need a sub or some bigger monitors beside these, but they'd make an excellent and affordable alternate point of reference in a mix, or would work very well with a sub.

The monitors being recommended (Genelec, Dynaudio etc) are way out of my price range But they're the best. The higher end Adams are really incredible too.

Not even tempted by the bigger KRK models? 6" or 8" i think.

yeah the KRK RP8s are good.
I'm defo happy with the HR824s I took home, although they were fucking expensive.

I recently went the KRK RP8 Route with the RPS10 Sub. I've been running the 8s full range and filling in the low end with the sub. although there may be an advantage of rolling the lows off the mains and letting the sub pick up the load at around 80hz. so far I have no complaints with this set up, but who knows what the neighbors think. Since they are a little older, every now and then I'll throw on some Burt Bacharach or Johnny Mathis just to keep things on friendly terms. Monk, Lee Morgan and Aruan Ortiz when I want to treat them to something extra special.

It's well worth putting the high pass on the main monitors. I have a Tannoy TS 12 sub and Event TR8s as my main monitors,

I find when the lows are rolled off, then the mid range is clearer as the speakers don't have to put their energy into the bass range.

Also overall, I can achieve a higher volume without distortion.

put the filters on for sure.
You don't want the bass to be re-inforced, or you'll mix the crossed over frequencies too quiet (same as producing with speakers against a wall/in the corner). If phase is reversed, you'll mix frequencies too loud.

plus the good thing about the filters is they help adapt speakers to your room
my genelecs got three bass settings and a couple of settings on the highs, means i can adjust until they sound best in my environment and helps compensate for the fact that i cant stick acoustic treatment all around the room!

im using old tannoy oxford t125 quality speakers even now do u think it is worth me gettin some monitors? prob spend £300 if needed any ideas

I'm looking to get some monitors for around 200-300 quid at the moment. They'd be doubling up as speakers to listen to music off my computer/decks with though... is it difficult to find monitors that are both good for frequencies AND good for listening to music on? If that makes any sense, which it doesn't lol

I have Yamaha MSP5's which I love producing and listening to tunes on - got myself a Tapco Sub underneath to fill out the bass so I could roll off the Monitors but they have a punch on their own.

Had them for like 18 months now and they still sound the nuts although having moved house with wood floors, the room can't really handle the speakers now.

I would really recommend getting some accoustic foam for them to sit coz they will rattle everything.

One thing that hasn't been mentioned is room treatment... spending e1500 on monitors won't do shit if you bass response is lumpy! I got Genelec 8040a monitors, sound lovely, but I have to sit on the couch at the end of the room to hear the bass at all..... you can do it yourself on a budget, too, check the sound on sound archives. Or stick a load of bookcases in, and velcro pillows in the corners. Thats what I'm doing, anyway. Great forum, btw. (I made my first massive wobble tonight, well happy.) Just got into dubstep recently, I make breakcore/idm stuff meself... so not too far removed, for those concerned that I'm talking shit!

Reckon I might get these Rokit ones- is there much difference between the rp6 and rp8?

About 2 inches

And as we all know, two inches is four foot less bass. Maybe.

anybody has some experience with these babies?

It seems a pretty nice solution for the likes of me, seeking budget monitor with deep enough bass response.
