much love to everyone ITT, really gives me the warm fuzzies :w:

as much as i hate labeling tunes and categorizing, sub-categrozing, etc - i kind of wish that the people making the tearout stuff would break off from the entire dubstep scene altogether. i feel like they will eventually (maybe), but i just wish it would happen now. just so there would be that distinction, because in all reality..they are two totally different sounds, vibes, and influences, the only commonality they have is the tempo (and i guess the snare on 3  )

easy all

Instra:mental and Distance however didn't show (probably because they were told not to bother) and the night was locked off at about 3 - 3:30.
That's not good ! Ofcourse a night flops when 2 dj's booked don't play. Ok, 50 people isn't much, but probably those 50 people are 'real' dubsteppers. Not good from Distance and Instra:mental, if I was there I would be very angry on them and disappointed. The greatest musicians play their thing like planned for the die-hards who took the effort to turn up !!!

My love with dubstep isn't over, and it probably never will. But I listen just to stuff I want to listen to and I try to discover much, not stricted to dubstep btw.

I just want to appologise for not being there, I was really loooking fwd to this one too, I was on my way at 11 leaving from Bloc weekender and just got told by the promoter the night was being locked off and not to bother coming. Im hoping to make it to Birmingham in the near future, hopefully this one will be organised a little better.

Respect to all the heads!

I thought that was the case, was disappointed of course but the staff at factory were pretty eager to lock the night off, the lights were on for about half of dbridges set! Hopefully catch you here soon man.

just as a personal 'rebellion' i might just play dark, dark tunes that noone can dance to this saturday at the custard factory :D
This is true, i only saw flyers a couple of weeks before the event and this was only because there was some on the tables at factory at another night I played at.

You should just play what you like anyway man, its not about changing your style just to please the crowd! You playing with 1210? Might be reaching this one, Alix Perez is large.

The night flopping had nothing to do with them not turning up, everyone there was expecting them to still show until about 2:30 when the lights came on! I was disappointed ofcourse, but not angry, not their fault at the end of the day.

Who said they won't enjoy it? there will be people there like you and me who really want to hear this stuff, why disappoint them just to please the masses? Play what you want bruv seriously, Birmingham needs as many deeper / darker heads playing there thing, otherwise the sound will never take off! you might even convert some people! (especially playing first set, anything goes!) I love playing poolside by the way, entertain the smokers.

I think im reaching tonight, not sure if i can make it for 10, i will catch your set if i can though.

^^^ this ^^^

Before when ive played in birmingham i have played what others want to hear more than playing what i would usualy play, to please the crowd. If ur worried about not playin enough "bangers" then take a few that will go off and add them at the perfect point in your set so that there is some veriety but you still be playin what you mainly like. lukily for me the next time i play in brum is with youngsta & kryptic minds so im going to be playin what i want to... but that said ive seen youngsta out and he even plays a few club rockers just to keep the flow going. skream - what did he say & chase & status - bits spring to mind. like wooda says... play what you like mate

safe guys for the advice! :D :D

yeh i reckon ill start of with more housey tunes then get into a bit of filth then the deeper stuff :)

and i'll def be reaching the kryptic minds one, i played out with Hakka the thursday night. last Sub:mission was with the more harder stuff like trolley snatcha etc. but this time, i think he has it spot on, he's thrown in bar9 just to please the masses.

Sounds more like the OP's love affair with dubstep *raves* is over more than with dubstep itself. I agree with that to some extent - very similar sounds seem to get played more and more often. I've not managed to get out much the last few months, but the tune selections on a given night can sometimes still be the same three months on! I have no objection to one set a night being chock full of nothing but bangers, but there's a limit to how many times I can skank out to the same tune in one night before I get bored. Bloc was actually a nice change to this with a large varied range sampling all aspects of dubstep, it was great that the DJs played what they liked most instead of pandering to the crowd pleasers. Frankly, that's what made Outlook festival for me last year - not the DJs who rinsed the same 5 tunes over 4 days, it was the DJs who carried on playing the sounds they've been playing for years.

And that's part of the whole issue really - DJs who don't really carve out a style of their own and introduce new sounds but instead only play stuff that they know will be popular. It's an easy way out, and I suppose an easy way when starting out to try to make a name for yourself. But ultimately, it's not gonna make you a superstar because XXXXX thousand other people are doing it as well, and just as poorly. And all those flavour of the month ravers will have moved on to something else after a little while.

To rekindle your love affair, pick nights wisely! Or even go listen to something totally different for a while and then come back.

wooda916 wrote: This is symptomatic of what has happened to the sound (especially in Brum) when someone like Datsik can bring in a massive crowd, but Distance, a pioneer in this genre, and a pioneer of the aggy side of things (without distance there is no Datsik imo) brings in 0 people!

It absolutely baffles me, what has happened??? Distance should be bringing in a few hundred people at least just on his own, let alone with Dbridge and Instra:mental playing and the night being part of the club autonomic tour (some of the best and most forward thinking 170 in years).
ye this is basically a clear example of how skewed the scene can be. even though there is a general bias towards wobble everywhere id imagine outside of london its much more exagerated and u get nights like the one your talking about. maybe bristol is an exception to this, but then again i dont really know much about the rave scene outside of london.

this kind of stuff is just a result of how narrow the view of this mass influx of people is on dubstep and how they have pretty much all been channeled to this particular side of dubstep and inflated it out of proportion. whether its because they simply dont like any of the other styles or whether they dont hear enough of it, its clear they aint looking at the genre broadly and they dont REALLY know about dubstep.

people are free to enjoy whatever music they wish though and you cant really blame them if they dont fully get what dubsteps about. im sure there is a small minority who have actually been attracted by the wobble side of things and then gone on to open their ears and appreciate the rest of the sound. Ideally thats what the jump up side of things should be doing, using its popularity to expose the whole genre, not end up segregating itself. i suppose its just down to the people who make up these new listeners.

It might just be a phase tho cos dubsteps the new thing at the moment, so once these people get bored of it and the next best thing comes they will probably jump on that, leaving behind the thriving core to push forward. im not really bothered if it dont change, as long as there are quality producers pushing originality and what dubsteps really about, then im happy. ignore the stereotypes.

i have my close 'dubstep' friends who know whats up, we all already had an appreciation for music beforehand, all had systems to appropriately hear music over (that being said some of them still love the hard shit, taste still plays a part, but they love it all). loads of my other good friends aren't the same way. one of my good friends heard sweet shop and she loved it, and she could play it over he computer at her place and enjoy it. a month later or so she says she's getting sick of how angry and dark dubstep is and i kinda chuckled, showed her a bit of silkie and she loved it.

its tough getting people to like bass music when they cant hear tha bass
this is very true! might be a possible reason why there is this bias towards the jump up stuff.

I think everyone should stop crying about their 'scene' being taken over and losing sleep over the fact that "chavvy people are listening to midrange wobble with chainsaw noises" who gives a fuck????

If people like midrange wobble or even pretend to like it because thats what is huge right now then let them like it! Just because you are partial to more original sub bass deep dubstep doesn't mean to say you should hate on everything else...its just progression in the music...people are just doing their own thing, at the end of the day chances are they are influenced by the same people you are...its just their take on the music...whats the big problem with the filthy tunes? or the metal influenced ones?

i say if you lot are really THAT bothered about being pigeon holed by people when you say you like "dubstep", because of this new popular scene thats recently blown up. Then maybe its you with the issue, you obviously care to much about what people think about you, or your 'underground scene' rather than the music....I LOVE dubstep...and i dont care if people think its lame or fadd that i will grow out of...because i know that in years to come i'll still be appreciating the likes of Digital Mystikz, Artwork, Datsik, Skream and everyone else who makes this great music....

I have nothing against wobble/jump up style tracks... however unfortunately this part of the genre has been saturated recently with a shitload of unoriginal, poorly produced waste music. this inturn gives a bad representation of what dubstep has to offer.

some of these so called producers need to learn how to produce, take their time, and come up with an end product which doesnt rely soley on being 'the type of track that i want to vomit over my gran whilst listening to' .

In my sets I cover everything from skull disco to Circus records, but whilst choosing what to buy etc I do notice that alot of new producers are jumping on this tearout bandwagon.

it reminds me of the bassline scene in UKG a couple of years ago. it was good as part of the umbrella that made up ukg... then it went massive and was saturated with shit.... and eventually went back to normal. I am hoping this is what happens with this style
