Dude you dont need decks to DJ and Im tired of people thinking you do. Quit caring whathardcore old heads think of you. Thier gonna die of old age soon and as long as your really beatmatching and not ableton visual cueing noone is going to judge you for being digital.
I think, the biggest thing everyone is neglecting to remind you people of is that you will be needing a multi-out soundcard to be able to handle cueing!
The layout of the controller shouldnt matter much, as long as it has all the buttons/faders/knobs you need, thats why I suggested the nano.
But, if you do wnat to learn, your not going to be able to do it with a controller alone. Id rather trade my controller and go back to a mouse then not have Cue... that would, quite literally, be impossible if your not being a total douche n visual matching.
Could you please elaborate on this point please? Im interested in getting a usb mixer for the purpose of mixing my own productions. I thuoght that tracktor allowed you to cue a track?
Thanks

I'm going to put in an order for one ofthe following;
http://www.thomann.de/ie/maudio_torq_mixlab.htm
http://www.thomann.de/ie/korg_nanokontrol_black.htm
http://www.thomann.de/ie/novation_nocturn.htm
Anyone have a last minute suggestion? People seem to be mostly in favour of the Korg, but as I'm going to be using it for mixing the m-audio looks more like what I am looking for.

Traktor will allow you too cue a track if your hardware does... what do you expect it to play your cue ups out the same output its playing your audiences master?
A multi-out soundcard is going to give you headphone cue...

Yeah dude it all depends on what you plan to use a controller for. Remember, you can map just about anything to just about anything midi, so, its really a matter of looking at the layout, and seeing if you could map it to suit your workflow.
That n durability.
Dont buy Gemini or Hercules midi mixers if thier plastic, the plastic lines die faaast.
And remember, chances are, youll need audio interface too.

The hercules rmx is aluminum, and it is an audio card as well, lets you plug in turntables too. I don't know about the build quality, but on paper (screen) it looks like a very good deal.

I picked up a hercules rmx today. Really cool solid unit - thanks for the advice. Going to have a lot of fun with it.
gotta say, the virtual dj software is ugly as hell. Been trying to get the unit working with traktor but no luck so far.

I had a play with traktor, I thought it was really good. I know fuck all about virtual dj software in general, but traktor was really straight forward. Some of the looping cue shit was a little weird, but still. Da bomb diggity.

Thanks for the advice on this Basic A

I actually got a Hercules control steel - which has the exact same controls/features just without any of the in/outs having only a usb. I got it secondhand on a buyandsell site for £70 (good going!) and it is in perfect condition.
All I need no is a two (+) channel usb soundcard and Im sorted. These seem to be cheap so wont be a problem.

So you will mix in your computer, and just use a stereo out for your monitors? What about your headphones, or is that what you need the 2 out for?
Wish I could get a deal like that on a steel. I'd buy one today!

with the virtual dj software (and traktor too) you can assign separate headphone and stereo outs as long as your soundcard has enough channels (as basic a explained to me earlier)

So what channels are you going to use? I thought you said you were going to get a 2 out usb. 2 out is just one stereo out, right?
