1. First of all................... End of production announced on the Panasonic Japan website:

[生産終了: end of production.]

SL1200 MK6 - discontinued: http://ctlg.panasonic.jp/product/info.d ... SL-1200MK6

SL1200 MK5 - discontinued: http://ctlg.panasonic.jp/product/info.d ... SL-1200MK5

SL1200 MK4 - discontinued: http://ctlg.panasonic.jp/product/info.d ... SL-1200MK4

SL1200 MK3DS - discontinued: http://ctlg.panasonic.jp/product/info.d ... -1200MK3DS

SL1200 MK3 - absolutely no mention of it in their catalogue

SL1200 MK2 - same as above

2. The article in the online version of the Asahi Shimbun, the second newspaper in terms of circulation and probably the best in terms of journalism is dated... the 21st of October 2010, last week (I have a paper copy): http://www.asahi.com/business/update/10 ... 00170.html

3. TWO announcements in the Yomiuri Shimbun, dated October the 20th:

http://www.yomiuri.co.jp/atmoney/news/2 ... T00665.htm

http://www.yomiuri.co.jp/net/news/20101 ... T00858.htm

4. Announcement by Power dj's, a huge retailer:

Image

They are announcing their final sale of SL1200's. Power dj's (Ikebukuro) say they have received an official notice from Panasonic. They are not the only ones... They seem pretty upset about the whole thing... They discuss this announcement on their blog and twitter account (scroll down to October first).

5. I called Panasonic Corp. DAV headquarters in Osaka to confirm the information.

I was told: mention of this was made in the ordinary meeting of Shareholders in May 2010. Reasons cited: integration and closure of specific manufacturing sites, from the point of view of optimal production, withdrawal from unprofitable businesses, downsizing of the workforce. There will be a press release most likely after the announcement of its consolidated financial results at the end of this month.

6. Sumiya music store, another huge retailer:

"テクニクスがSLシリーズのターンテーブル生産終了するそうです"
"Production of the Technics SL series of turntables has ended."

etc.
fuck this

I can see this kind of thing happening. Also, i can see third party spares and replacements being available come the time that the original parts eventual dry up from the market.

Sad times.

ITs only the Mk6 that has gone out of production

This has been blown way out of proportion. If vinyl was "really dying" then the smaller companies would be the first to go, not the industry standard. I Reckon this is down to the bombproof build on technics. A good set can easily last 10+ years so the market has been saturated for many year as a set in decent condition can go for a fraction of the retail price. No one is buy them new

There is no other format held in such high regard as vinyl, it will be around forever

Ironically in all this, the main reason 1200 series became industry standard was because they were installed in virtually all night clubs and bars world wide that have DJ's. Yet as is becoming more and more noted, these same bars either dont have them no any more or the ones they do have a fooked! I'm sure if all these places that have relied so heavily on them to make them money spent a little of it on maintaining them, it would have quiet a big impact on the business.

But it's not like technics are the only turntables in the world, plenty of other companies make them. Lack of 1200's never stopped the birth of hip hop or the sound systems in Jamaica, right.

i was just thinking "does this mean my decks are gonna be worth more?". not that i want to sell them but its always nice to know i'm sitting on some cash.

also, looks like i got mine just in the nick of time too!

that makes it even more depressing that the clubs and bars have shit mashed up decks in them. as they blatantly have no excuses now. bloody odd as its surely far more cost effective to service some turntables than fuck about with stupidly over priced cd players.?

Yeah. Just checking, I couldn't make out the point you were trying to make tbh. The MK6 was just a limited run type deal anyway.
