Made the first try-out circuit today, balanced XLR output with P48.
Tried it out real quick by attaching the mic capsule (wm-61a) and XLR connector with alligator clips, it works.
No audio up yet. Will give it a another spin tomorrow and compare with my previous recordings.
Also gonna try the primo cap which has less noise + build some new circuits

So Glad this thread is back!
I'd love to make my own synth one of these days, only done a little bit of soldering though...
Would also really love to make my own softsynth, there are a few i've been thinking about in the past few days that haven't been done before I'd love to make.

First one finished, 2nd one (so that I have a stereo pair) will be build tonight I hope. A few pics and audio included
Short audio clip of a acoustic guitar of just a few notes (please note that I'm not a guitar player, I have 0 skill ). Raw clip no processing at all, no noise reduction, only normalized to -0.1dB. Soundcloud
I'm very happy with the results, S/N ratio is pretty amazing imo

Just finished the 2nd one. Very happy with how the look and sound. The 2nd one records a wee bit hotter, so I can't call them matched but it's a minor detail which can be accounted for with the gain of the preamp.
Planning on building another pair, with higher value resistors (5.6K Ohm) for recording higher SPL. In the current pair I've used 2.2K Ohm resistors instead the 5.6K which are in the schematics.
The body is a brass pipe with a diameter of 22mm, lenght around 120mm.
EDIT: Some more pics
EDIT 2: How much did this cost me?
- Brass tubes and wire mesh around €10
- Microphone capsules around €15
- XLR connectors around €3
- Parts around €7
- Research, build and troubleshooting time: ALOT
So total of around €35, which is a rough approximation. This is for the pair considering one has all the needed tools.
2nd mic without housing
finished pair

how do these compare to something like the sure sm57 or whatever it's called? It's what I've got and I'll shit bricks if I find out that the actual mic is a $2 piece of chinese crap! What would 'better' condensors or whatever the part is called be?
derp i just realized that it's not a condenser mic

I have a SM58 but I haven't compared it with these yet. However the SM58 and SM57 are dynamic mics not condenser, like you just said. My mics are condensers using electret capsules, which are omnidirectional and pick up everything 360 degrees. The SM's have a cardioid pattern (unidirectional) and pick up sounds in front of the microphone and eliminate background sounds.

those mic's look amazing! sounds waaay better than i'd expect from a homemade condensor. nice job!
before I get into the analogue synth build, I'm going to finish building that homemade subwoofer. I just got some new wooden parts that will hold up a whole lot better than what I was planning on using before!

I made 2 spring reverbs not too long ago, I'll take pics of them as soon as I get the chance. They sound sketch as fuuuck I love them. It's the 2 speakers + slinky combo.
I have yet to solder them to make them official, once they are soldered I want to close the tops ( I put them in wooden boxes, one I made myself and one I found) and maybe brace the corners (is that right?) to cut the vibrations in the wood of the thinner box (it creates a lot of buzz when turned up.)

Thanks man!
Going to taken them apart and spray the body with some transparant varnish. The untreated body oxidizes pretty fast if touched and looses its shine

Yeah I've also bought some stainless pipes, which I'll use for the next pair.
So I've found out that that varnish didn't work at all, it just messed it up even more. Took that shit off and polished it again, leaving it that way for now. What a waste of money

I know it might not be ideal but a thin coating of linseed or a similar light oil will prevent corrosion to a point.

Interesting, but wouldn't it be easily wiped off or worn off during use and make the body greasy as hell?
