Personally, I like all the extra ambience that bleeds through (particularly when recording sounds I plan to layer with other percussion). My H2 just arrived today, and I can tell this lil fucker is gonna be a lot of fun - and I know that I'm gonna be using the 4-mic option loads..

I used to walk around with a minidisc and sony mic..but that never worked as well as planned. Too many things to hold and bother with. This is just a self-contained unit of awesomeness. It also came with a 4GB card (and a 1GB extra backup card), which can provide for a lot of random stick breaking, door slamming, traffic recording, household noise exploring, etc.

Ha, exactly!

My H4 is worth its weight in gold, which is saying a lot at the moment. Heavy usage. If I'm tracking percussion or something, I'll just set up the h4 as a room mic, tuns of swooshy ambience. Money. Love that it has a mic stand clip too. Just quality all around.

Yeah - I am having fun exploring all the features, and I was impressed with all the extras! Mic stand. Hand-held mic handle. Earbuds. Windscreen. Pouch. 3.5 to RCA cable. All in addition to the USB one would expect... plus the 4GB card and vinyl sheath I got for an extra 6 pounds. Score!

That is sexy :W:

I love my H2, I use it a fair bit, but I should really use it more. Might spend the whole day recording tomorrow, and then mess about with the recording at night.

For field recording stuff, man it can be a B, just end up with hours or recordings of strange things... have to just sit there, and chop and chop. Part of living the dream ;)

Snares sound pretty close to eskmo style snares imo. Bit too loud probs, but this is just a wip i threw up last night.

Just thought I'd post it here, figured people who'd been involved with this thread might be interested.
yes! i commented on this on soundcloud as well, great start.

would you be able to give some insight into how you created those snares? it sounds like there's a lot of snaps and pops which slowly lead into the massive combined clap. are any of those claps reversed? i'm only having very limited success with this style.
There's about 3 claps layered over eachother, added a bit crusher to one of them to make it kinda grainy, but didn't totally saturate it, just enough to make it a little rougher, like it was pulled off a vinyl or something. I gave one of them a little reverb and left the other. I tried not to let them hit at the same time, so one hits on the beat, another like a tiny tiny bit off and the other again a little off from that. Saved that, then exported it, brought it back in and brought the volume down on it, layered some sticks being dropped over it. Then layered some finger clicks over it all. There's also a sample I took from a recording of a clock being wound up, I pitched that to C, then saved it and brought it in and just before the claps and the sticks hit it cycles through a few fairly random notes (they're in key, just didn't think about rhythm or which notes i was using to make it seem a little unco-ordinated)

Throughout doing all that I was eqing and playing around with levels just trying to get everything right and make it sound really splashy and wet kinda. Hope that helps.

Yes, this helps a lot, thank you! i had a vague idea, but i wanted to see the entire process through which a snare like this could be made. much appreciated kaiori, i'm looking forward to the completion of this tune!

Every now and then after spending months working on tunes I remember this thread exists. Anyway, I like to drop shiz in it if I figure out new stuff. So, this is probs the closest I've got to an Eskmo bass sound and I thought I'd share it with you guys since you might be interested:

Soundcloud

Basically, just a sine wave sliding up an octave as your sub, a square wave which gets band passed, doing the same, layered under it at a really low volume. Then I took the 3xosc in fruity loops and set the lowest wave form to a square, the middle one to a triangle and the highest to a ramp, kinda like a standard dirty midrange. Bit of distortion added. Then automated a low pass filter to make it wobble a little, and added a high pass filter to cut out all of the low end stuff to make it give out that weird sorta bumble bee sound eskmo has a lot of the time.

Percussion was done same as last time, just lots of natural samples, a lack of quantize here and there, tons of layering of claps and junky hits from the EGOLESS sample pack to get those wet snares.

I just downloaded the egoless pack, looks awesome!

however, reason is saying that the file type is unsupported, even though they're wave files... halp?

As far as I remember, the samples are 32bit wav, so that is probably why Reason can't open them... Just convert the ones you want to use to 24 or 16bit in your audio editor...

brilliant, thank you! i'll try that out tonight.

EDIT: maybe this is a stupid question, but can i ask how to accomplish this?....
