This threads looking good ^^
Cant think of anything to add or question but i remember that reasens advanced reverb unit had some cool efx presets... would be worth checking out.
Likeing the 4 diffrent filters and automating between them that sounds cool ^^
The Saw films seem a good place to get some dark audio samples ^^ remember "otherside" did a Kontact pack of them ages ago.

You guys are often over-thinking this whole "dungeon" sound.
A very good way to make something sound moody is modulating the volume. Yes, simply using an amplitude envelope can add so much to a boring sound!

Anyways, since ive been a bit of a moany tnuc - heres a trick what isn't that "Dungeon" but it sounds great in Dungeon tracks.
FL users :
Load up 3xosc - 1 oscilator - Sine wave.
Turn CRS all the way left.
Play the notes : D4, C5, D5 as a chord.
Load a fruity bloody over drive, put it to the preset *Drive*
Load a fruity Reverb 2 - ER to 0 - Dry to 50% - wet to 90% : set the low cutt to around 300-400hz
Load another fruity blood over drive put it to "drive" again.
Raise the attack on the 3xosc to 10-o-clock, HOld, full right, Dec in the middle, Sus full, release 10-o-clock.
Without the reverb, theres your basics to a "dungeon" sound, resample it and stuff .
I just found out how amazingly useful this post is, thnx Ledge!
Gonna try and make it in reason/ableton now

^ essentally, you want to over-drive distort your sine and the Fruity Bloody Over Drive is very 'middy' sounding so maybe if you can use a multiband distortion unit it'll work just as well !
I guess this has a similiar vibe to some of the 'dungeon' sounding tracks, but wouldn't say it's the same thing. Still a major WIP though.

If anyone is interested in collabs/feedback/sample swaps etc etc drop me a line.
you lie i hit you up on aim and got no reply
to be honest i think it said you were away so i wasnt really expecting a reply

Great to see everyone contributing!
Ive really learnt some great techniques, especially the Z-Plane filters. Thanks alot Wub!
Ive also got some nice sounding drawn out filter sound after discovering more about editing envelopes, its great to finally get something you are pleased with.
Ive got a new question now, just wondering whether anyone can point me in the right direction as to how to create a similar sound to that in Mr Lager's track 'The Sea'; im looking for the gritty sound that can be heard in the video at around 0.31. Its quite a commonly used sound shape I think, quite a few deep and dark producers have something similar. Kryptic Minds and Distance are definitely keen this sort of sound!
Thanks in advance!

In which DAW did you make a real z-plane filter?
I'm interested in making one myself
As for the sound you asked about, I'll take a look at it tomorrow

He is carefully choosing the few elements he uses to ensure they fill up the frquency spectrum. Coupled with careful eqing and long reverbs and delays to blend the atmospheric elements together.
If you post and audio example mate we can give you some mixdown advice if you like
Sorry about missing you on AIM too, hit me up again!

Reverb, pads, accidental FX, blips, echo, white noise ran through an automated filter, sucked in effects, a lot of hi hats/rides and difference in length of a drum thingy. For example: Bar 1 has the same pattern as Bar 2, but Bar 2's snare is 120 ms long and bar 1's snare is 70 ms long. A pattern could go like this: Bar 1 bar 1 bar2 bar1. Same kinda pattern, but still catchy. *cough trust nobody*

I always thought he would layer an extra incidental with reverb underneath the snare at the 3d bar.

Yea, all of this is possible, but I took the song Trust Nobody as an example. He uses a lot more techniques than the ones I described

anyone got any tips on creating pads/leads, i always find this doesnt really get asked about. Kryptic minds one of us album describes what im after perfectly the synths in that album are just really dark, also the little synth stabs that are in the one of us track are amazing ive always tried to recreate these but i fail miserably, they sound like a kind of dub techno kind of pad but alot darker. they come in right from the drop and carry on all the way through the track
i hope all that makes sense
JFK ill hit you up soon ive noticed a few things that i want to change in my track before i send it about again
edit : could someone direct me towards some kick samples they would recommend i dont mind if there free or not, all the kicks i have are really punchy kicks ive eq'ed them and they still sound overpowering and far too punchy

have you tried filtering them and using an amplitude envelope? if you cutoff above about 300hz (lowpass) and have a slight attack, you should loose some of the punch
