i'm offended by people who take offense to me using the term "gay" to describe something that sucks, i reserve the right to use whichever language i choose, without being called a bigot for doing so. afterall, what's in a word ? people that get upset over the use of gay to describe something that sucks need to get out more and really put things into perspective as quite frankly there are more important things to worry over. just get over it, and stop restricting my civil liberties to express myself in any way i choose.

christ i havent used that word for that reason since middle school. you cant deny that continuing to use the word like that is going to perpetuate the thought that to be gay is to be inferior. its not about restricting your "civil liberties", its about treating people with some fucking respect. would you use the variation of a racial slur to refer to something that you dont like? if you are going to say that race and sexual orientation are different, then just admit that you think being homosexual is inferior, or stop using the word like that.

Listen man, some things you are born with... sexual preference is one of them. You can't change or modify that... who would CHOOSE a live of hardship of being messed with, given a choice?
Seriously, it's innappropriate in this day in age... we're not quite to the point were someones sexual preference is a trivial matter in our society anymore... until we all live with true equality, I just won't understand why you would joke like that. All I'm saying to you is that it is offensive and harmful to an entire group of persons, and that I've had discussions with said persons, who would also like this to come to an end.
I'm not really trying to like bitch at anyone, simply pointing out that something could be perceived as offensive, and in fact, was offensive to several persons.
Most thinking people would just say "damn, I could see how that might be offensive" and modify their behavior... I mean obviously, yea... satire. I understand your argument, but I simply think it causes too much harm.

so because i use the word gay to describe things i don't like, you infer that i'm a bigot who thinks 'homosexuals are inferior'...you need to get out more. not that it makes one bit of a difference, but i'd just like to state for the record, I AM GAY. and i'll use the word how and when i please. all i'm saying is that instead of imposing your beliefs on others, allow people to express themselves however they please, respect the fact that i want to use the word in that context and get over it. and don't even bother comparing the word gay to the 'variation of a racial slur', because as someone of colour i find THAT offensive.

Yeah people like to do this a lot don't they? It's not the fucking thing. Look at how many people have died becuase of racism and then compare it to how many people have died because of homophobia. I just think comparing the 2 things is slightly demeaning to the millions of people who died at the hands of racists ragimes over the centuries and still die to this day. It's a bit like when Mick Hucknel said that having a problem with people with red hair is tantamount to racism. Fair point if your willing to dissmis a great swath of history.

i think we get into murky waters when we try to compare oppressions, so i am not even gonna go there. but i do find it interesting that people will defend one slur as if it's their GOD GIVEN RIGHT to speak like an idiot, and then go on to state that other slurs would be offensive. where do you draw the line? no one is trying to infringe upon anyone's expression. in fact, i am attempting to help people express themselves with a larger variety of language. but if people want respect, then they should show some. and respect the fact that some people here (me being one of them) are asking for folks to show us some respect by not tossing the "gay" thing (or the "gash" thing either) around as if it's the only word you know how to use. you get what you give.
my point is, that language solidifies concepts and codifies oppression into the everyday language. it really has less to do with being offensive (i am actually not easily
offended, but i do get pretty indignant when i see people defending idiocy), than it does with not understanding how language reinforces stereotypes and excuses ignorance.
and frankly, i don't think BEING gay gives you a free pass to reinforce the language of ignorance. we have this massive width and breadth of language, and THAT is the best people can come up with? and then they want to defend their ignorance?
www.thesaurus.com , mufuggas. USE IT. for fuck's sake at least ATTEMPT to evolve.

well if using terms that i'm comfortable with, and not ones dug out of a thesaurus makes me an idiot by your standards, then i'm an idiot by your standards. but please don't try and impose your standards on me, isn't that what colonization was all about, the whites thinking us blacks were ignorant and needed to be taught western culture...look, it's not my intention to offend anyone or start an argument, i love and respect you all as brothers and sisters, i just wanted to point out that using the term 'gay' to describe things that suck doesn't make you a bigot and nor does it make you ignorant, as in this case intelligence is subjective. i just use it because i feel comfortable using it to express myself not to offend anyone, please respect that.

personally i don't think that everyone who uses the word is necessarily a bigot. however, i DO think that it makes them ignorant. and by ignorant i do NOT mean stupid. there is a difference.
but again, if the language you choose strikes a deep chord with someone else, and they respectfully ask you not to use it...why would you continue? it's not a matter of trying to colonize your mind or your speech or change who you are; it's a matter of respecting other people who have articulated their feelings on the matter. and more or less, i am just asking people to be aware of the language they use HERE, not trying to control what you do off this forum.
and if you are going to open the door to talk about colonization, let's talk.
language has already been colonized by the dominant culture, and that is how slurs of all kinds have entrenched themselves in the language. so you say that asking you to stop is attempting to colonize your language, but my friend...THAT HAS ALREADY BEEN DONE. and our willingness to not only use slurs in everyday language, but our willingness to DEFEND that, is proof positive that our minds have been colonized and we will still defend the oppressive tools we learned from the colonizers.
i have to go ahead and ask: why do you defend THIS particular term so vigorously? this is totally not me trying to start something personally with you, more a curiosity because i do not understand.
p.s. sorry for derailing the thread. i just like discussion and can't help myself.
