It could be a location thing. Most people here are from the UK where Skrillex isn't as big, so they don't hear about him as much. Over here in the US just about everyone listens to Skrillex. I hear tons kids in school talking about him every day. And the USA represents a much larger demographic than the UK.

I'm from the UK and I can definitely say I hear Skrillex's name more than Skream, Mala, Coki whatever.. not saying I like Skrillex but he is more known than the other artists now.....

From my experience it's always Nero, Chase & Status and Magnetic Man that get named off the bat when Dubstep comes up in a conversation. Not being an condescending arsehole or anything but I think for anyone over 18, in the UK at least, Skrillex is too obnoxious to be well received. Even at the worst nights/events I've been to, that 'Scary Monsters' has never been played out, Bass Cannon/Sweet Shop/Louder yeah, but nothing as 'bro' as Skrillex.

I've got a feeling his demographic is predominately 13-16, but I could be wrong.

Rusko - Pro Nails is probably the first track that comes to mind when people mention dubstep in Amsterdam.

round here almost no one knows him, except for teenagers and people heavily into dubstep/dnb, most of whom are not really fond of him i might add.
however everyone and their mother knows burial, and remember radiohead is the most listened-to band of all time on last.fm for example -> thom yorke + burial -> omgwtfbbq
even people i know who don't like electronic music at all, whether its cause they're indie hipsters, heavy metallers or just too old to be into any electronic stuff that came out in the last 10 years still know burial and many own his album.

there definetly are others who are bigger in the scene but none of them have such a widespread audience.

oh and +1 to the guy saying skillets isn't dubstep

The last party I was to where they didn't play Skrillex was in July. It was my own fucking party so playing his tunes never even came up.
Anyway, he's pretty big here, atleast in my agegroup.

pretty much every review of an edm album using a lot of vocals mentions Untrue at some point :p

I could tell you what was probably a Skrillex track by the way of obnoxious high pitched sounds but couldn't name a specific one, apart form the Cinema remix.

Haunted the most famous dubstep track? Come on now, I love it but its not even close. Ignoring brostep for a moment, I'd say Night is the most famous 'true' dubstep. That synth is infectious and instantly recognisable, people who don't even know the name of the artist or track start humming along to it when they hear it and it goes off on any dancefloor.

Moving into more bro territory, I don't think Swagga by Excision & Datsik has been mentioned yet. I'm pretty sure that was the first dubstep tune I heard, and pretty much everyone knows it at least here in Australia (and I'm sure moreso in the US). And yeah, unfortunately Mt Eden and Skrillex have to be mentioned here...

As sine69 pointed out earlier his tunes are being bought in the same numbers as guetta and beyonce

The fact that i think his tunes are shockingly bad along with (probably) the majority on here means nothing 100 times that amount of people love up his stuff

do you want your special underground goodies to be popular? My honest answer would be yes. I love it when my taste clicks with that of a fuck-ton of other cats, without having to be dishonest with myself. I like it when venues and promoters can (profitably) push the sounds i like more, so i can enjoy an amazing night on a perfect sound system with a big crowd, and not on a monday night (cielo, nyc)!! i couldn't care less what's mainstream or underground... id rather meet more people. but i'm not going to some night called the "Filthy Womp" or some bullshit for it and i don't even wanna meet those people.
