sell all your shit and get a proper analogue modular, I say. all that shit you have looks cool, but it's redundant. modulars aren't.

So..... how does it feel to know that anyone with a $300 desktop PC and an internet connection can basically do all the same shit you can do, at just a tiny fraction of the cost?

It was a serious question. I really don't understand why a person would spend evidently a fortune on a bunch of redundant equipment, especially if it isn't one's profession? Turntables seem fairly pointless to me unless you play live, in which case they're a prop. ...I mean I get it, it's fun to spin and all that, but for the purpose of producing, having four turntables is a bit much. Strikes me as pretentious. It's like the guy who has the walls of his garage littered with racks of power tools, lots of shiny related gadgets, and an air compressor, when the only time he turns a wrench is to change the oil on his wife's Honda. Alright, so his friends are jealous of his shit. For what?

This has nothing to do with me. For all he and you know, I don't produce anything at all. That doesn't change the nature of the question (which, again, was a serious one) one bit.

But that's not even remotely true.

I'm not saying you need anything more than a $300 desktop and an internet connection to make great tunes, but a $300 PC doesn't do everything that kit does.

Take the SP1200 he has - that piece of gear has a very distinct sound it gives to any audio you run through it. It sampled at 26.040 kHz and 12-bit.. and while yes, theoretically one could just downsample on a PC, it doesn't sound the same. I've tried.

Perhaps- but if you always wanted one, and had the money now (but knew you wouldn't later), then you might...

Well i dunno if that comment was aimed at me or OP, but heres a good example;

Ill challenge you to make an acid tune in one hour.

Having the right tools for the job makes eveyrthing a load easier and more fun.

Sure you can make tunes on a dell and a copy of utorrent but its easier and far more fun to turn on a x0x, a 909 and a digital recorder. And also likely to sound much better.

People spend thousands on cellos, pianos guitars and all sorts. Music tech stuff is relatively cheap.

Although there is an element of \/ i grant you

But bitching about others people possessions is childish and quite pathetic really.

Well, fair enough - but not really the point. 'Cause the other side of that coin is, as I'm sure you'll agree, there are innumerable things a person can do with a laptop and torrents that the pictured equipment can't do. To an extent it's all just sound creation, it's only when things get fine-tuned to an extreme that you see a difference between a cracked copy of Ableton and these room-fulls of tools. That's why I caveat professionals. For someone who just enjoys making sounds and what have you, all the stuff just looks to me like someone needlessly throwing money at a hobby - and then showing it off on the internet presumably for people to envy.

Ultimately nobody cares or ought to care what another guy does with his resources. But I figure if you offer evidence of your choices up for public opinion on a discussion forum, the point is to inspire debate. Is there any other purpose?

So, anyways, OP - Do you sequence your synths with the mpc(s)/maschine and record multitimbral parts live? What's your workflow like?

I've just gotten a hardware sequencer (mp7) and literally just midi'd it w/ my KS4 today for the first time. Trying to figure out how to send program bank changes and what not.

And how's maschine? Looks interesting as a good balance of software/hardware (hopefully the best of both), but gets a lot of mixed reviews...

edit: God, wish I had an octatrack and a Virus TI, would be set for quite a long while with just those 2.

Take cookery. An experienced chef might be able to discern whether you've used ghee or butter; very few normal people would. But if you use that as an argument not to use the best quality/authentic ingredients, you go from a high quality restaurant to supermarket microwave meal for two.
Have a read thru the DOA thread dude. :) Some interesting points raised.

I appreciate you having a polite discussion without being a dick like a lot of the earlier posters btw... always happy to engage in a discussion ;) Even when youre wrong :6: :6: :6:

"Or you can buy a midi keyboard controller and Reason or Logic + lots of VSTs for all the classics above ?"

That is the question isn't it, is it truely worth its value these days, either way everyone if you wanne admit it or not would love to have hardware instead, physicially feeling and changing the sound just gives that little extra.

Love DOA btw, way worse off than this, reading threads on there make me laugh non stop, so much hate going on.. or love what is it?

Werll that's where I look at it differently. I paid £400 for komplete which is now worth basically nothing. My 909 is now worth more than I paid for ir and will only increase0 in value. Its an investment. I've actually got the point where I view hardware off ebay like a library... Buy seomthing and if no good\when bored I sell for same / more and get something else. Lost a shit ton on cubaqse / vsts / novation type stuff.

Fair play you can't compete fot free but anyone taking it seriously should buy their tools anyway for a numbers of reasons discussed elsewhere
