cogidubnus wrote:I thought last night's was absolutely first class, worked both as a satire and a standalone piece of science fiction (almost a 21st-century update of 1984). The lead actor was brilliant, and the direction was top-notch too.
Someone before said it was slow - I thought the pacing was pretty refreshing, it actually told a proper story and managed to give a huge amount of detail about this (near?) future world without massive stretches of expositional dialogue.
So yeah, I liked it. A lot.
bang on, exactly what I came on here to write
the first episode was a funny distraction but had no real message beyond forcing us to think about how we would react in a similar situation, I liked it but I expected more from the pen of Brooker, however, I thought the second episode was fantastic.
I've been watching so much slow (predominantly 70s) sci-fi recently that I didn't realise how daring it was until about halfway through.. this was prime time tv but it felt like a satirical THX 1138, the pacing was beautiful, unlike the last episode that had to rush to tell the story.
The world was well thought out, a comfortable hell, I felt claustrophobic and angsty during the scenes in Bing's cell.
The main actor was incredible, pure calm empathy until he erupted with genuine desperation at the end.. the message was loud and clear, if you didn't get it you may as well start pedalling now

He was Posh Kenneth in Skins! It was weird seeing him so serious.

Haha I 100% agree with this. It was pretty powerful. I just didn't particularly enjoy that sensation.

I was thinking that he was going to kill the judges with the glass...
He could have at least hooked up with that girl...

THIS! He did a really good job in Black Mirror. I thought the monologue was quality. There did seem to be something missing though at the end of this 2nd one. I would have preferred it to be sadder If he had killed the judges or himself though it would have ruined the whole point

It was really good, but like someone else said, pretty depressing. There was no light at the end, the message is: 'If you can't beat them join them, and if you don't like that kill yourself'.
Plus what happens if you don't look at the screens for too long? Why wasn't he taught a lesson for breaking the screens in his bedroom? And the one thing missing was security cameras. Surely all the rooms would be rigged with people watching 24/7, he wouldn't have been able to take that shard of glass with him.
Aside from those lingering questions, it was still a good piece of science fiction.

After seeing the first episode I'm in two minds. On the one hand it was too arty, stupidly unrealistic and at times ridiculous. However, it was also very interesting, different and thought provoking.
I thought the pig-sex was basically to show the lengths that leaders will go to in order to be popular. It wasn't really about maintaining order, more than maintaining his image. In a way, politicians do f*** pigs daily, as a metaphor for the scandal and corruption that goes on. However, the pig could also be seen as public - as a govt person said "It needs to be sedated" - did he mean the public are passive viewers who lap up any old garbage?
Not to forget the dystopian look on technology, which shows its ever-growing recording of life. e.g. Twitter, Youtube.
Finally, I also think Brooker had a small dig at the royals in the final montage as the princess seemed fine whilst the PM was a clear mess.
Overall though I still think Screenwipe is much better, probably because it's half as pretentious!

Tea Leaf!
That was utterly fucking superb. Brilliant writing and great acting/styling throughout. BrafuckingVO, Mr Brooker!
So nice to see someone who's made a business out of criticising others showing how to make good telly. Entertaining, thought-provoking, absurd and ON POINT.

I thought Toby Kebbel was quality in that last episode. Once again I thoroughly enjoyed it but like many others I'm a Charlie Brooker fan boy. I was a bit thrown by the futuristic houses & screens etc then the classic cars though? This is probably to symbolise something that I totally missed the point of. Interesting that it was the same writer as Peepshow also!

My God that last episode was intense.
Really powerful, makes me wish I had a better vocabulary to describe how good it was.
