As you said it's probably heavily distorted, probably frequency split too so that the higher parts can have more distortion than the lower parts in the sound.
Also I can spot some white noise being modulated in volume by an LFO, not sure though.
Not really sure how to make these kinds of sounds tbh, but maybe to crate the 'illusion' of it being more aggressive, put an ADSR on the oscillators amp with short sustain and play individual notes for every 'yoy' and make sure not to set the amount of the ADSR to high.
Sorry if my post was more confusing than helpful :cornlol:

I too need some help, with getting something similar to the upper midrangey(?) sound that follows the bass in this tune:

Haven't really gotten close to it yet, none of my attempts sound as bright as The mighty Widdler's sound does. Sounds very muddy and generally not so interesting.

@Fused. The basis of that sound is just a detuned saw, maybe with a delay, not exactly sure which sound you're talking about in that track as there really are a lot crammed in there. If it's the one I'm thinking of, the sound comes from the slow attack on the filter envelope and the quick release.

The one that starts at 0:55 in the video.
I've been messing with detuned saws, but I'll get on it again, thanks.

Okay, so Flux Pavilions lead synth in his remix of Cracks.
It sounds heavy and powerful yet still maintains a beautiful melodic aspect to it, something not seen very much in the more aggressive side of dubstep.
I'm in love with it, but I can't seem to recreate it.

I use logic, so if there are any other logic users out there, it'd be great if you could tell me how to do it in one of logics native synths, because i do not have any external VSTS, but if anyone could explain the basic theory of it to me, even if you don't use logic, thatd be MUCH appreciated.

Thanks in advance

The bass is layered in maybe 3 to 4 parts.

Working bottom to top it "probably" goes something like...

Sub bass at the bottom, experiment with a pure sine wave and maybe a low-passed square/saw for a bit more of an audible low end (be aware that this won't have as much power as a pure sine, not knocking it though).

Then another synth with playing the same notes, an octave higher than the sub, experiment with square/saw waves (or in the es2, go through the digi waves and you may find something a little closer), make this one a little wider, you can do this by using effects that cause the sound to become more stereo (chorus, reverb etc) or by using logic's stereo imager.

Then another synth providing the high end, this could be a formant wave, go through the es2's digi waves and check them out or any other wave form at a higher octave until it sounds close, then try turning on the unison at the top of the synth and adding more voices for a fuller sound, then make this one a bit wider than the last, the unison should help with this but try the other effects aswell. I think the top layer might have a bitcrusher on too, try adding an exciter and other distortion units on it aswell to get a more gritty and cutting sound, but very subtly.

I believe it is done with 3 oscillators, a pretty basic sound.
The sub sounds like a sine and a saw combined.
The other 2 oscillators should be the same, but 1 octave from each other. Also I believe they are Formant Saw waves.
You have to find the right level combination betweent the 3 oscillators to sound right, also polish it with EQ, maybe add some effects, but the basic idea is the 3 oscillators I think

Hope I could help!

Merry Christmas!

To sonika: I am using that setup and believe me I tried hard to get along with logics built in synths, but trust me you will never get the sounds you want out of them if your going for brostep. I cannot recommend more getting a copy of either albino or massive. They are simple to use and 9999999999x more effective than the es instruments. If you can afford it buy it, if not then torrent it and buy it if it ever brings you profit.

In massive:

Osc 1: Smooth square (wavetable position all the way to the right). Set to formant (intensity at half way). Take pitch down to -36.00.

LFO: Set rate to 1:16. Sine shape. I have moved the sine so that it ducks directly in the middle. Amp just over 3 o'clock.

Attach the LFO to the pitch of Osc 1 and to the amp of Osc 1. Take it up to 0.35 on the pitch and move the lfo so that the grey line (inverted lfo) is just a tiny bit over half.

Envelope 1: Attack half way, level all the way up.

Attach Env 1 to the intensity of Osc 1 and take the blue line all the way to the end.

Effects: Classic Tube (Dry about 10 o'clock and Drive just under 9 o'clock). EQ (Boost the highs a tad)

Play your notes in the C3 - C4 area :)

Enjoy! Merry xmas.

Hey guys!
Anyone know how to create this beautiful synth?

Soundcloud

it appears at 0:14 - 0:16, it kind of sounds like a vibrato/glide type lead, it reminds me of an anime video game
I appreciate the help if anyone's willing to give it a try on massive or fm8, im having a hard time getting there

First off, thanks to Fused Production for the reply. I've gotten a little closer with whit noise, however, that makes the distortion sound very noisy at a certain point. It's the exact vowel of the scream that I'm having trouble replicating.

Thought I'd post the video again and get a second opinion.

It's the heavily distorted screaming/yelling wobble at 1:29

Any thoughts are very welcome

Got to pop out now so made a very quick patch that might help you out.

Not sure if you have the same version of Massive as me so I made a screenshot instead. If you like I can try help you explain what I done when I get back if this was the kind of thing you was looking for.

Obviously after this use other distortion effects to get the desired sound.

I haven't got my production PC here, so I can't check that patch, but what I'd recommend doing is make a standard YOI, lowpass it a bit, not much. Then fill in the higher freqs with white noise as mentioned, and automate a lowpass filter, so that the white noise goes well with the YOI. Hope you understood, and hope I didn't repeat exactly what everyone else said. :W:
