Pangaea or Joe Nice would be my choices. Or Peverelist. Peverelist doesn't get enough love round here. Perhaps a Blackdown one. All of those would be pretty sweet and VARIED!

Anyway, what happened to dubstep being bass heavy music around 140? A few months ago I slipped into the mindset that dubstep was just this deep, dark and 140 dungeon style stuff, and everything else was some sort of house/garage/wot u call it mash up, but recently I was thinking about how diverse some of the tunes that people called dubstep were when I first got into the sound.

Compare the likes of Skull Disco, Hemlock, Hessle, Deep Medi, Hotflush, Well Rounded, etc. When I was getting into this properly, everyone just called it dubstep. Now there'd probably be a different genre name for each of those labels.

Well in my case, that's certainly not true. Though I'm one of the advocates of the dubious term "UK Bass" (I think it works), I'd call a lot more things dubstep than most.
Earlier, I said I consider the likes of Girl Unit, Jam City (perhaps not the Waterworx EP, but deffo the Magic Drops EP, that's 70% dubstep at least), Nautiluss, Pangaea (always has been) etc. dubstep. That met with some criticism.

Even BPM's are getting trickier. I also mentioned Orphan101 for example, his latest EP contained the incredible "Junker" track, which is around 130 bpm's, but because it's half-stepped, to me it sounds just like dubstep and I'd consider it as such, despite the bpm discrepancies.

Things were a lot less disparate, I think. For instance you'd have tunes that could be called both grime and dubstep, it was harder to draw that line. I think with time styles just got more clearer and it's easier to tag things now. To me stuff like Girl Unit, Jam City etc are not dubstep, dunno what exactly to call them - and I hate vague terms like "bass music", but they definitely don't sound like dubstep.

Although it is a vague term, it's easier than tagging something as :

Electro-Acid-techhouse or Pro Post-funk-dubstep. There's simply a lot of tunes in the middle somewhere. Lending rhythm from one section, percussion from another, effects from something else and all the time still have dubby sub bass.
And that's what Pinch did so good on his fabriclive mix.
Even though there are "sections" in his mix (it starts off on a rather 4x4 tip but the second half turns into dubstep and the end into crunkier territories), he's managed to keep a dark essence and presence of sub bass throughout the mix. It really unifies it.

Yeah, I agree it's easier to call it that. I just avoid to use it as much as I can. Not really into it either tbh. I can get into some of it, but it gets old.

Can't see it being Heny G, Mala or Quest as they've got albums forthcoming, slowly but surely.

Thing is, wouldn't the artist have to closely affiliated with Tempa in order to do an album and not have an EP or any sort of release out in the last two years to do an Allstars?

Jay 5ive or Joe Nice, maybe Phaeleh would all be ideal to represent the real sound of dubstep for sure.

Doubt it tbh. Distance already did the last one of course and Pinch just finished his Fabric mix.
Also, I don't think a Deleted Scenes mix would sound any different from Distance's Allstars mix.

i'm gonna agree with garethom and say either pangaea, joe nice or peverelist..although i'd prefer joe nice as you know it will have the weirdest obscure unreleased tunes that are varied in sound from 'tearout' to 'dungeon' and 'deep' (i hate all those terms)

I can imagine another 2CD pack like vol. 7. One CD "traditional" dubstep, the other more varied stuff. There were some posters saying e.g. Loefah couldn't do a Dubstep All Stars mix because his music/mixes are too far gone from dubstep but that's the same case with aforementioned Dubstep All Stars 7 where the 2nd CD mixed by Ramadanman isn't exactly dubstep. Whatever you call it, I think it's much better than the lates Dubstep All Stars compilation which was really monotone and therefore kinda boring after some time listening to it. Just present a wide variety of anything at least partially connected to dubstep to emphasize diversity of the sound. Someone said earlier, few years back we didn't care much about distinguishing sub-genres, it was just dubstep. Great idea is Pangaea to represent this wider side of bass music, he hasn't released any mix CD as far as I know and he's certainly a great DJ. Same goes for Peverelist. Would be sick if Mala did the other one.

That was my point. What does dubstep sound like? That was the trap I fell into. If it didn't sound vaguely like dungeon, I didn't think it was dubstep, but to further my example compare Untold - Don't Know Don't Care to Appleblim & Peverelist - Circling. MASSIVELY different, but everyone just called it dubstep, because it was bass heavy music between roughly 135-140. Not sure what made me wake up and realise, but I mean, people call stuff like Sicko Cell "House". No way is that house, it's more dubstep than house, but it seems hardly anyone is calling it that nowadays.

Should be a 3 CD affair If Pangaea put together a mix anything like his sets, it would definitely be one of the most varied Dubstep allstars, plus his productions are pretty varied anyway. Joe Nice would smash it with the amount of exclusive plates and I reckon Peverelist would throw some sick Berlin style techno tunes into the mix.
