But vinyl 5-10 years

CDJs will be long gone before vinyl goes. CDJs will likely be replaced with laptops or things that use USB or small external hard drives. All hold digital but hold so much more data. Its only a matter of time before CD is scrapped and its just a deck with a usb port or something similar. I'm not saying this will ever happen or will happen soon, I'm just saying you'll definitely see the death of CDJs before you see the death of vinyls and turntables.
I have no idea whats going to happen... but in my opinion vinyl will die out first and then CDJ's.

why? it makes much more sense for vinyl to outlast compact discs, because it actually is a different format.

digital is digital regardless the shape of the disc it's carried on. CDJ is just reading the data off a disc and emulating a turntable style playback jogwheel kinda thing. All exactly the same with any other digital decks

It's just that the CD discs are huge, plastic and round, while holding way less data than any thumb drive. So they're wasteful if nothing else.
Vinyl has a reason to last, even if it's a small population of users, but digital has no reason to cling to old, wasteful and cumbersome mediums

Digital evolves so much quicker than analog. Vinyl has been around for about 70 years and still going strong. CDs have been around about 30 years and since then has seen DVDs, Blurays, USB sticks that are tiny and can hold an insane amount.. same with external HDs. It won't be long before CDs are a thing of the past because digital just moves too quickly.

Barely anybody owns a portable CD player now.. people don't even own mp3 players anymore (which were CD players replacement) because its all capable on their phone. Likewise for the sales of physical CDs, most people will just download a digital version instead of buying a physical CD.

Vinyl will out last CDJs, there is no doubt about it. They already have CDJs that have USB capability and DJs use that.. or just use laptops. It really wont be long til CDs are scrapped.

The digital world isn't as loyal ;-)

he's right though

hopefully laptops and controllers will replace cd's as they are improvements on the digital format

where vinyl is its own format and there will always be people pushing their use

why hopefully? i'd rather rely on cdjs than a laptop.

really? guess it depends on your laptop. for me its easier to sort through music on a lappy and i can do more with it.

i'm not trying to paw through little silver discs to find what I'm looking for, and most people look funny cueing up a little cdj imho

just a silly look for djs in general

tbh you download it and then put it on a cd anyway, just cutting out a step really... suprised it hasn't happened more widely already but i spose it's just about when it becomes more affordable

This was the one. Granted, I think the majority of it is hipsters picking up the new Black Key's album or whatever, but even the fact that people are getting into vinyl for casual listening makes me happy.
Yep, this.

When people talk about vinyl sales going up, they aren't talking about some garage label suddenly being able to sell out a 1000 press run, they're talking about major labels pressing vinyl for the hipsters, and people buying represses of huge albums, unfortunately.
Yeah I mentioned I meant the medium, not electronic music itself. But any demand for vinyl is a good one because it keeps an industry going, no matter what is being pressed it calls for pressing plants/distro/parts/cutting heads/retail etc and helps to bring costs down as a whole which will help make it more affordable for everyone else (hopefully).

Personally I prefer vinyl, but I would much rather use CDs over a laptop, and I would rather see someone on vinyl or CD than a laptop. Timecoded stuff is in the middle, I like it, I just don't like looking at laptop screens myself, or seeing someone standing in front of one. But I'm there for the music anyway, it's just the trainspotting geek in me who cares about the medium.

why would i bring a laptop, worth several hundreds of dollars/euros/pounds, to a dirty club full of wasted and sweaty people, when i can burn my tunes onto little silver discs i can buy for a few cents and play on the club's equipment? plus it's more likely for a laptop to crash than for 2 cdjs to crash.

Yep, just expanding on your point dude! :4:

That's a good point about keeping pressing plants in business, just hope that it does bring costs down, and not (if they think they're just catering to major labels) push them up.

records add up same way. a cd wallet for about 60 cds isn't that big and you can burn about 15 tunes onto one cd. so that makes 900 tunes, which is enough to play a whole weekend.
i'm not denying some advantages of playing on laptops. it's just not enough for me to risk bringing my own shit to a club.

I think if it did go to the way of laptops and controllers venues would provide a laptop and it'd be a usb job. Thats assuming laptops/controllers completely replaced cdjs.
