fact of the matter is people are going to pay their $$$ to be entertained... whether its with vinyl records spinning or 1 software controller, if you give the crowd what they want (that varies from show to show and town to town) nothing else matters

for every 1 music snob (not a derogatory term) like the people ITT there are 100 people there just to get shitfaced and have a good time

personally.... id rather see someone who makes their own tunes playing out on a controller than someone who uses CDJs and knows how to beatmatch two songs into each other every 3-5 minutes... thats not rocket science and thats what most "DJ's" I see doing

If its just about people who want to be entertained then why have a DJ at all?
Would you rather see Mistabishi pretending to DJ or would you rather see someone who doesnt produce but actually knows how to mix well?

my ideal perfomance would be someone actually performing their own tracks and djing a few other tracks in between to set the mood.

there's so much more to djing than beatmatching and so what. things like blending two tunes so they work together as something entirely new, selecting tracks and reading dancefloors are much more important. if you can master those, it doesn't matter if you play vinyl or digital or cdjs.

If someone wants to be a DJ (someone playing other peoples tunes in clubs/parties/etc) why do they want to use a controller instead of using the more traditional mediums (eg cdjs/vinyl/dvs) ?

VDJ 8 is actually looking to be pretty cool. Controlling visuals and stuff, but once again has the issue of not looking as professional (which, has nothing to do with functionality, but will keep people away from it)

VDJ has the same rep in the DJ industry as FL does in the production industry, but a bit worse.

I wouldn't personally use VDJ, but it would definitely be ignorant and immature to just hate on it like a lot of people do for no real good reason.

in my eyes ableton is a completely different beast...

if you're using ableton then you are performing more than anything. and im not trying to take anything away from it either, i think ableton has the ability todo things djs can never dream of.

- these days controllers, even the best ones, are dirt cheap compared to a nice set of turntables or cdjs
- if you're using real vinyl you're limited to playing tunes that are pressed
- a top of the line controller and software can do way more shit than anything else annnnnnnnnnd here comes someone to argue this
- some people do suck and cheat
- i'll think of some more

I originally started playing around on a pirated copy of VDJ when i first started "DJ-ing". No audio interface, so it was all eyes and counting and practicing until i knew exactly how the mix was going to turn out. Around this time, I was really big about thinking that beatmatching and turntables and "read dj-ing", so i didn't really give myself any credit for messing around with VDJ.

Fast forward to now, I think beatmatching is a fairly pointless skill if you're going to be in the digital age of dj-ing since it isn't necessary at all, depending on your setup. I now use Stanton SCS.3m (http://www.stantondj.com/stanton-contro ... scs3m.html) which I've mapped to do exactly what I want (this controller is amazing for me personally, so many options). I have, and dont use, a Traktor Audio 6 since I mainly bought it since there was a deal that with the purchase of the Audio 6, I got a free copy of Traktor 2. I play tunes all by eye without beatmatching, since that gives me more time to play with effects and chop up the tunes and do something interesting instead of standing there with my headphones on, looking like I'm thinking deeply about life... I know my tunes, I know what sounds good, and I know that people love to hear good music played in a different way than they hear every day.

I still respect those who are masters on turntables and CDJ's and can pull out a fire mix, but I think it's not always right for everyone. More power to whoever is out there banging out mixes on VDJ

-imo price shouldnt be a problem. if you really want to be a dj, then it wouldnt bother you to take the time to save up to buy decent gear. PLUS, most clubs provide a decent set of cdjs (800s ATLEAST)

-i think that playing vinyl-only sets doesnt mean you are limited, seeing as theres a good 25+ years of electronic music that has already been pressed.

-and yea i agree some controllers are more flexible, but lets be honest here, the flexibilty caters more for electrohouse-esque sounds (eg where you use a shitload of fx) as opposed to the kind of stuff that people are into here.

I agree with you... but when you get down to it, 99% of the people there have no idea what knobs you are turning (or pretending to turn which is always funny) and just know what they are hearing and feeling. The only thing you NEED to know is how to keep the floor moving, beatmatching, whatever you wanna break it down to.

ive been to lots of places, clubs especially where a dj is just beatmatching one popular tune into another every 3-5 minutes

not saying its right, just saying its reality

me personally, i like seeing people play their own tunes the most, with whatever medium they feel comfortable with whether its CDs or a controller i dnt care as long as its done well

the last time i saw someone playing actual vinyl was 12th planet... now THAT was a SHOW

i had a huge long response started but really what this all comes down to is your generation/style/music/audience/location/and everything else. things are different everywhere in every aspect and the best way to do something in one place might not be the best way in another

it doesnt matter what program you use, what matters is how you use it.

and i find it funer if thats even a word, djing with turn tables , since you get the whole feel and you can use fast knob turning , moving and changing stuff and more of control over the tables , but for virtual dj and no hook ups you have to do alot of clicking with one hand unless you got two computers next to each other lol
