dj cam rocks, almost as hard as dj krush!

Krush doesn't even play the same style of music, and I wouldn't go for "Jazz" to describe what kind of sick shit Krush is doing. Cam is GOD

at least his older albums and the splits with ronny jordan and toshinori kondo go for 'jazz' as you use the word, not to talk about his remix of miles' 'black satin/on the corner' (which is even better than the remix of 'in a silent way' by dj cam on the same record (miles davis - panthalassa: the remixes) - imho).

The guys you mention, st germain, cinematic orchestra etc are perfectly good at what they do - cinematic orchestra owned my soul for years - but other than the instrumentation, they don't have anything in common with jazz. The compositions different, the vibe is different, there's little to no focus on improvisation... The link with stuff like DJ Cam is even more tenuous.

We went to the international jazz festival at the Sage in Newcastle a few weeks back.

makes me very happy to see that people here are loving their jazz and recognize it as serious foundation for lots (nearly all) music to follow

John Zorn anyone? i loves my trad jazz/bebop/post-bop as well as avant-garde and free jazz but didnt notice Zorn being mentioned yet (might've read thru too fast tho!)

just a note - was interesting that jazz got a thread here too, I quite recently posted on planet-mu and had soo many people give me fantastic jazz recommendations... but also funny that jazz got a thread cus as I really fell in love with dubstep, I was raving to all my mates about how I felt dubstep was doing much the same thing as Miles Davis back in the 50s /early 60s with 'sense of space' in his music and using 'silence/dead space' in his music to a significant effect.. .dunno if people see what I mean?

I don't think the cinematic orchestra are as distinct from jazz "proper" as you're saying here, there are quite a lot of lush improvised solos in their music for a start, especially from their soprano sax player. I don't know what sort of vibe is "true" jazz (genre definitions again, let's ask wynton marsalis!) but some of their music recreates the vibe of early 70s alice coltrane (complete with strings and harp) to a tee. they swing a bit too (so maybe they would keep wynton happy).

i'd agree that cam/krush are instrumental hiphop first and foremost though, albeit an abstract form.

there's euro jazz, us jazz, so many u never heard of jazz...I am still discovering new funk or way out stuff even!

I'm a massive jazz fan right now... especially Nu Jazz / Broken Beat and the recent output from Japan.
Also feeling Latin in a big way, from smooth Brazilian cuts (can't beat it) to lively Cuban material.


As for the classics, I'm digging slowly. Recently copped some Coltrane, Gillespie, Brubeck.
