getting over the initial shock of how awful it is and it doesn't quite seem so bad as it did on first listening
it's just
for every soft rock/prog track
there is an actual soft rock/prog track from the 70's or 80's which is better
and doesn't have a vocoder

it's just all too bland
clear stylistic approximation without any soul or re-appropriation in an interesting way
as Daft Limmy so aptly put:
"it sounds like keygen music"

Not really hearing the "prog" aspect of it or maybe that's just me listening to proper prog rock I dunno.

A lot of it is surprisingly close to corny soft rock though you're right. Which would be ok without the dumb vocoders. There are still bits I like though. That other one with Pharell that's getting played on the radio is good.

I thought parts of Contact were particularly proggy
also, a lot of it is reminescent of that phase when most former prog bands basically started writing pop music in the 80's
Yeah for me the best/least worst bits are the Pharell tracks and also the Panda Bear one
just because it sort of does something newish and interesting
as for the rest
in a lot of instances the vocoders sound like a songwriting clutch rather than an artistic device
I have no problem with soft rock ala Fleetwood Mac and everything else that's been mentioned
but Fleetwood Mac are better songwriters than Daft Punk

on the converse though
I imagine Lindsey Buckingham would have a hard time making a good record with a SP1200 and a 909
which is somewhat indicative of the bigger problem with this record

I agree on the prog turned to soft poppy stuff in the 1980s sound but yeah the issue is really that while it's got some nice instrumental bits the songwriting maybe isn't strong enough. Totally agree on the vocoder. Sounds like it's in a load of tracks just because they couldn't write good singing parts on their own.

I like the Pharell tracks still. I'm going to keep listening anyway and see if it grows on me more/if I can tolerate the stuff I don't like.

I like the older Daft Punk:

this is literally one of the most boring things ive ever listened to. just absolutely banal in every way.

i was never all that big on them but i did appreciate a lot of their output, especially homework and a good portion of discovery. collige already linked it, but tunes like revolution 909 were and still are sick. nice sampling, groovy basslines, and simple but powerful house drums. it was straightforward, fun, catchy house music


obviously theyre entitled to make whatever the fuck the want, but i think the biggest problem is that really they didn't make a house record, which is what they're good at. instead:
"We wanted to do what we used to do with machines and samplers, but with people."

and as a result it's entirely missing everything that ever made daft punk interesting and worthwhile. it's also one of the most horrendously overproduced things i've ever heard. it's like wanting food and then getting a plate of soylent green or some shit. it just sounds so sachharrine and unnaturally clean/processed

But you know what really pisses me off?

It's the fact that people have been praising Daft Punk's latest album as "next evolution in dance music" while ignoring current producers like Disclosure, Joy Orbison and the entire Swamp 81 who are making actual "next evolution in dance music".

It just fucking pisses me off.

I think it's great. Not a club record, but a great pop album. Plus I'm a stickler for chic style funk guitars. And this has the actual guy from chic in it. Listen to it as a pop record, and not as an underground edm record.

And all producers everywhere should check the production values, because they really are outstanding. It sounds so crisp and open, the bass is solid and warm and round and the drums on every track, especially giorio by moroder are deep and solid yet light and airy.

It sounds expensive, lol.

Granted, some of the songs are a little bit cheesy, but then again I've spent the last few weeks producing children's music, so the cheddar factor doesn't seem so strong in that context, ha.

That song Touch - like some kind of Carpenters funk musical. Love that.
