OP: sorry for not posting something helpful before. For free stuff, have you checked out DSK's stuff?
http://www.dskmusic.com/category/romple ... struments/
Pretty good imo, but as stated earlier, it can be hard to get certain phrases to sound real. If sitting in the background of a mix, you can probably get away with it, but if you want to make it play something like a solo, you just have to embrace that it's not the real thing. lol
There is a saxophone rompler!
edit: After checking out the site more, they have more stuff available for just $25.

those look awesome artie! I tried downloading one, and got a .dll file. I have no idea what that is but I think it might be a windows only thing because it's not doing anything but opening up TextEdit and giving me scrambled computer code on my mac!

ah yeah sorry. If I recall correctly, theres some kind of wrapper thing or something(obv I no clue lol....) that you can enable you to use vsts on a mac. I've never had to use it though, so I can't speak with certainty.
With the $25 dollar donation thing they have, you can get kontakt files or soundfonts though.

uhh I think you can run VSTs. I mean, I have a bunch of them in my VST folder. Sooo unless I'm completely missing something technical, yes you can run VSTs on mac. Ableton has a built in wrapper.

Oh cool man! I didn't know Ableton could do that. Sorry, I swear I see people getting bummed all the time that stuff isn't AU...maybe it's Logic?

Previous versions of Reason couldn't do VST, but Reason 7 was just released and it can do it I'm pretty sure. And I don't think Pro Tools can either.
Still trying to figure out this .dll file... hmm

Drop it in your VST folder. Aren't most VSTs just .dll? Again I don't know if it's different from PC, but I'm pretty sure some of the free VSTs I use were just a .dll I unzipped into my VST folder..

VST's run fine on mac. Its only Logic that forces you to use AU. And ProTools is that aaxx or axx or aax or whatever the hell its called.
Most of what im using is vst, but i do have to run a couple AU. Not really sure why, but the vsts of a couple programs just dont want to work for me.

i'm pretty sure that .dll VSTs are innately mac incompatible. There does seem to be a potential (partial) solution:
http://forum.cockos.com/showthread.php?t=37410 this might be of interest to you
edit:
https://github.com/jerseycoder/wacvst this too. looks complicated though

Would you mind if I asked a thread-specific question guys? ; )
I downloaded some mallets VSTs, oriental sounding bells, sharp metallic sounds etc. I wonder if you use such VSTs and if yes, which are your favorite ones?

Tweak Bench has a nice free one. Their vst names are weird so ive forgotten it but google will bring up tweak bench no problem.
