always been more for the pitch adjust.
When it comes to touching the record/platter in emergencies, I avoid pushing a record forward at all costs - im convinced you have more control slowing a deck down by tapping the sides of the platter (not the record).
if one deck was running fast i would rather slow the other deck down than push either forward.
anyone else think that speeding up sounds worse than slowing down? or that one is harder to control than the other?
Oh and if i spend a little more time getting the pitch right before i drop a tune, I dont have to touch the platter/record.

I use a bit of both. Before the tunes in the mix I touch platter, as soon as the faders up I'll pitch chase only.
When you're pitch chasing, you've gotta think of it kinda differently, cos you've gotta over compensate for everything.
A good analogy I read in a mates DJ book is of two cars on a motorway, one going slower than the other. The slower car would drop behind, and then to catch up it wouldn't just have to go at the same speed as the faster one, it'd have to go faster. Then it'll be too fast, so as soon as it starts over taking, it'd have to go slower than the other one - but then it'd drop behind. So you gotta keep making smaller and smaller changes to the speed, over compensating each time, but gradually getting closer to the speed of the other.
Pitch chasing is essential when the bass is shaking the decks so much that touching the platter instantly skips the needle.

Jus wondered how you mix.
Ive always used finger-work, pushing round and slowing down.
I have been advised a few times now, that i should really learn to mix with the pitch control (to speed up and slow down)
so i jus wondered your thoughts? Seems quite hard to learn to mix that way (i sppose its not what im used to now), but people have advised me its a much better way of doing things.....

Even tho u took the piss outa my other thread i will give you some input,
No offence but you say you use your finger to speed up/slow down records, well mixing like that you will never or very nearly never get a mix 100% in. Its ok usin a finger to flick the record forward a touch as your mixin in the headfones while workin the pitch simutaniously. but when you have 2 records in the mix and you\slow down/ speed up with a finger it makes it sound really sloppy. I mean say your mixin a tune you bring it in and its goin a touch too slow at one point, rather then using ur finger to speed it up causing the mix to sound funky you can or should use the pitch only instead. That will make your mixes blend alot better. I mean if you really want to get really good at mixin then all i can say is practice lots using only the pitch.. You will be surprised at how much better you will get trust me. How good you can get simply depends on how much you practice.. You just gotta get a real feel for your pitch its your best friend on the turntable and listen .. Allso when you feel your gettin better usin more pitch record youeslf using just or mostly pitch then again usin mainly finger work. then when you play it back you will notice the difference.. Allso Its best to get good on Technics Direct drive coz for a start they are like a top turntale allso near enough all radio stations and clubs and that use mainy Technics or at least Direct driues instead of belt. 1more thing listen to other djs that are good learn from them. But try create your own style, o and myself i use mainly pitch with a touch or finger now and then.. But i feel much more confident when using just pitch and i get mixes banging.

ps.. i voted for Pitch
pps both my Technic 1210s are out of action
i only have my old Kam Belt driue decks set up at the moment they are proper deadout

Pitch and push!

"Mixing records is like making love to a beautiful woman..."
(delicate, flickering touches over the sensitive areas of the vinyl...)
Pitch to get 'em in spitting distance and get the 16 bar sections lined up, touches to get 'em locked in, and even more, to keep them locked in... records often change tempo as you get closer to the middle especially if they're old. And I'm a garage man - you can't shock out 2step dubs without touching the records. Similarly, you have to touch the record with dancehall sevens.

no offence, but i felt your post to be a little patronising! Thanks for your advice but i
do know how to mix, (and whats sounds good/bad - with push V.S pitch!) thanks for the advice on what decks to get, ive had my technics direct drives for 2/3 years now, and have a radio show and have played out! Ive been listening to DJ's of all types of genres for years and years, lol, so i do understand about learning from them.....they inspired me to want to mix in the first place....and i feel im gradually creating my own style .... but its work in progress with time and practice, and jus with what individual musical tastes you have, to what tunes you play and when, and how, the structure your sets, i feel.
Did you read the whole thread before posting? I did write another post ....
Im by no means being rude, please dont take this the wrong way, i felt the need to jus thank you for your input and explain my position.
plus, i did feel a little un-easy about taking advice from someone who thinks a dubstep remix of the eastenders theme tune would be SIC!

JOKE!
oh yea, and how did your dj/producer name finding work out?
My initail question was simply to find how everyone else does it, and what their thoughts were, and from all the responses, including yours, i feel its time to try and master mixing with the pitch.

It didnt mean to sound patronising, was me giving pure advice, im just crap at wordin what im tryin to say, it easier to get points across more clearly person to person. Anyway becoz you said you use mostly finger work i thought i would try to advice you to pitch instead to help you get better. NA thats a different Dubstepper askin fir name advice i read it today. Allso i didnt say an Eastenders remix... I said it would be jokes to have the intro melody at the begginin for like 20secs then for a proper big tune to drop. Its was only meant for a giggle

anyway haha. Erm i think i read the whole thread cant memba. As for takin advice from me, well if you heard me mix then you would know my advice is good, again im not tryin to sound patronising. Remember i learned from 1 of the best Scratchy D, trust me b4 he was a MC he was such a sik dj and if any ever caught his shows in the past would know what im talkin about. When he used to come down to mine to mix i would jus stand there aberloutly gob smacked. He could lock any tune 100% his mixes gave me them tingles down the back of my neck. Anyways im quite interseted in just how good a dj you are, how bout posting a little mix? Im not too hot on pc techs but if any1 readin this knows what lead i need to conect my mixer to pc to record i mix, leme know and i will post a mix on my wank old Kam belts too as my 1210s are deadout. I heard a deep medi mix from some on here few weeks ago, was quite big, Anyways good luck Mastering the pitch
