Aphex Twin has been in a lot of films and documentaries and shit, but not realllyy
I get the impression a few metal types like venetian snares but otherwise definitely not
Neither are close to the level of "to the masses" as kanye or pink floyd

The 'masses' aren't the same anymore. Media is more specialized and more targeted. You hear less crazy music on the radio now because there are better, more targeted means for fans of the music to reach it (the internet, blogs, youtube..), even if music has gotten crazier since the '70s (which it has).
A band like Sunn0))) or someone like Venetian Snares would've never gotten on the radio in 1975 and without the radio, they would have never reached a decent size audience the way they did in the internet era.
So "alternative music"'s stars aren't as big as they used to be, but more left-field musicians are able to reach a much greater level of success than they would have 40 years ago.
