yeah it was!! but all i hear is good music whatever they want to call it... there you go a new name "GOOD MUSIC STEP" or "NOT SO GOOD STEP"

On the level of personal definition (which I would say is the most important--ultimately, if you can make a case for a track being "dubstep" (defined along whatever lines you can think of), and others agree, then it's dubstep), dubstep is rhythmic experimental dub. Different producers and DJs approach the style differently (the quite dissimilar sounds (imho) of Burial and Glyphic, for example). What's held in common is a dub base, that's mixed with breakbeats, made more synth intensive, bassier, what have you...

It's just having fun with dub.

Kraftwerk were latecomers, made popular by the new wave following punk. Neu and Can were the true originators of heavy beat-based electronica that even dubstep should acknowledge (in my umble opinion)

When it comes down to it, dubstep for me is sub-bass weight and ponderousness. The tinkles and shit can be crass or beautiful.

sorry to derail even further, i just don´t have a definition.

but that above is just not true. can and neu were absolutely fantastic, but they didn´t precede kraftwerk. and wouldn´t call them electronic music by a long shot, can´s use of synths was minimal, no drum machines. neu had a very "producer type aproach" as a band, but still, they were mainly a live band.
of course things happened well before kraftwerk, but pioneers is definitely the right term. along with tangerine dream they took huge leaps.


as for dubstep, i just relate it to closer to soundsystem culture than anything else. but than again, i think grime is just hiphop....
