A total coincidence but I'm reading a book called 'Made to Stick'. Its about what make successful ideas as aposed to forgotten ideas. i.e Urban Legends like the guy who meets a hooker gets drugged and wakes up minus a kidney V's Adult recommended daily iron intake. I'm wondering how the central points of the book might answer this question, fuck i might even use them to get on Pete Tong if i ever started giving a fuck.

1.Simplicity (I love Boxcutter but his back catalogue won't bother the top twenty)
2.Unexpectedness (killer idea or hook that gets people talking)
3.Concreteness (i.e not vague and makes sense)
4.Credibility
5.Emotions (does it make you feel something)
6.Stories( Not sure how to apply this to music but it refers to people repeating the idea verbally, in the book, and that helps it sink in. So it could be radio/Dj support etc.

And when you take the first letters they spell SUCCES so it must be true

This is just to throw ideas around so please no flaming me as if I just planted porn on grooverider.

Yeah these could definately apply to what makes a tune successful. Unexpectedness could mean how inventive/innovative it is too.

Yeah I hear ya about that. There is a big difference between what will make people move and personal tastes. I think most of that shit out there is pure garbage or just boring. Someone Like Boxcutter or Autechre will be critically praised but you won't see them at Top of the Pops or Dick Clark's Top Twenty Count Down.

Too Dark, Too Experimental, not mainstream sounding....Same thing with other styles of music. Some of the most complex and beautiful music gets pushed aside because the fact that the average bloke can't hum to it or tap his toes to the beat. Its a shame really, but if you want to make money and produce dance floor tunes you'll have to KISS.
