It is blackly funny - think the bit where the phone harrassment guy finally meets up with the author with the rape fantasy is downright hilarious. As is the emo guitar chick and her affair with the russian cabbie. And the end scene is one of the funniest yet wrongest scenes I've ever seen in a film.
I actually didn't think it was that depressing, and as Shonx says it was very funny in bits.

You should watch Palindromes also..that is really wrong :D

What was the other film he did before Happiness, was it Welcome to the Dollshouse - kind of an antidote to those family films where the kids are all cute and wholesome.

Yeah, if people want really depressing go for A Short Film About Killing - laugh a fucking minute

'Palindromes' was one of the most twisted movies I've ever seen!

Yeah, we used to have an impressive Polish cinema at one point. Now something that is perhaps worth to watch appears from time to time, but it's real shite overall. There are still some brilliant animations being made though.

Yeah man. Not uplifting. Try some Lars Von Trier on for size. I've never seen a film by him that wasn't emotionally jarring in some way - incredible director, but not for the faint hearted. Breaking the Waves, The Idiots and Dogville are all must-sees!

Yes, Black Cat White Cat is a favorite of mine! Hilarious, and excellent music, to boot!

I watched "American Splendor" the other night, and was glad I did. It's about a no-bullshit, sarcastic bloke who writes a comic book about his ordinary, yet complex life.

if you enjoyed American Splendor, i cannot recommend Crumb highly enough.

Especially the scene where he visits his brother. Dysfunctional, much?

I work in a independent video store atm, lots of gems on the shelves, cos the owners compete with the chains by bringing in the weird shit.

so recently I have seen
TAXIDERMIA... fucking brilliant, very odd film... peeping toms, professional competitive eaters, taxidermy. Any Questions?
MPD PSYCHO... Twin Peaks esque Detective thriller made for japanese TV by Takashi Miike (Visitor Q, Happiness of the Katakuris, Graveyard of Honour, IICHI THE KILLER[!!!!!!SEE IT!!!!] lots of amazing films)
FUNNY GAMES... As a result of another thread which mentioned Haneke's work.Dark. Like the John Zorn Soundtrack.

totally agree with Parson, Crumb is a great film about a great artist!

i will talk about horror/terror, but despite cheesy teenage terror or things like that, i will talk about Frank Darabont's 'The Mist' based on a novel by Stephen King.
I watched it yesterday, it blow my mind with fucked up situations, very huge (and good) dramatic moments, tentacles, religion even some gore with a big twilight zone taste (in the good way). Actors are good, and dialogues are simple and real, making a good film about people in a town surrounded by a spooky fog with something inside...

if you like this genre will be great, if you don't like it, i have to tell that is a good movie, darabont is a good director!
is one of that movies that makes big a genre!

anyone have seen it?

note: Parson, as Lovecraft fan i think is a must!
