Well the main reason being a few times at the past DMZ's my camera would have to wait for it to auto focus before the photo takes, missing key moments.

Why not go for a used one? We've just taken a Samsung GX20 in part-ex at our shop, and'll be selling it for peanuts, not much past £300.

depends on your camera's AF, the amount of light, and your lens too. for instance, most canon lenses can focus okay, but the 50mm f/1.8 can't AF on a single thing when wide open. af on most decent cameras is pretty quick, provided you aren't using a flash.

full-time manual. autofocus in the general case, but even in af mode you can adjust the focus manually.

My eyes generally arnt good enough to use manual focus, i usually use AF with the 9 point focus system thing and choose what part of the image I want in focus that way.

but the reason I use a DSLR is for the range of ISO (stupidly high to low), the ability to do certain things like curtain sync your flash, propperly expose photographs the way you want them, control depth of field 100% etc etc etc

I'm aware most of this you can do on modern day compacts but you still dont get the 100% control like you do with a SLR camera.

I actually think this would be really good for a first DSLR.. I've seen some great results out of it too.. can get amazing focus/limited depth of field from quite wide apertures too (so if you're in a low lighting environment you can still achieve the same results) and it comes with two quite ranged lenses.

Anyways if I had been starting out..I'd start with something like this, good price too

Lenses were: EF 20-35, 75-300, and a Sigma fixed 150 f/2.8 Macro.

im an absolute neek when it comes to cameras so forgive the idiocy if/when appears.

im looking for a compact camera, preferably a not so expensive one. what im gonna be using that for - mainly filming, mainly at night. and the video has to have sound to it too, preferably of a decent/good standard aswell. taking pictures of course too, but thats less important.

would be great to hear someone whos into this. concrete models, models to avoid, features to have an eye for when looking around etc.

Thinking about dipping in to the market for a DSLR. Mainly for personal use as I've wanted a good SLR for fucking months, but also for my college work too.
Been looking at the Nikon D60:

Anyone care to shed some light on pros or cons of each? or what type of lenses I would be looking at? I'm a complete N00b tbh.
Would be used for alot of cityscape/landscape photography and would preferably like something with a good range of shutter speeds and manual focus.

Get the Nikon if you can afford it

Even tho I use Canon and love it too bits, the 1000D is like propper propper budget system thing and I think even i'd rather use the Nikon.

I have read good reviews on the 1000D but If you're going to fork out the dollars for the 1000D then go the 450D I'd say..

Everyone I've spoken to who's bought a 1000D regret it.

student loan bullshit is finally on its way to being sorted. before i waste most of it on various substances, i figure i should buy some useful shit first...including a camera.

mainly because i've used the 6.3mb version earlier this year. also, it'll be my first camera but i dont wanna get something i'll out grow too soon but at the same time, i wont be doing 'seriously' enough to fork out loads.

i know nikon's,sony's and cannons are rated more aswell so if there's any similiar priced ones worth checkng or if anyone know of any better places to buy them, lens' for future purchases etc let me know.

Fuji 9600's are sweet cameras, good for someone coming onto SLR's.

A bit shite in low-light, and the LCD is small, but it's still pretty good.
