WWII britain was extremely patriotic, but somewhere along the way, thats all faded and been replaced by general apathy and pisstaking about your country. why is that? i think that thatcherism really put a spin on the way the british view their own country.

yeah i think it did, it fucked over a lot of people, and turned a lot of people against the government (and to an extent - the country itself). I must say that, despite being english myself, I don't like english people myself and find most of them to be twats, I'm also increasingly fed up with how we can't seem to get anything to work properly here...

Good distinction. The UK has a great tradition of culture and we have a hell of a rich history, too.

I don't really have a problem with well placed patriotism, but I am naturally a little bit untrusting of hardcore patriots. We live in a strange world.

I've recently completed reading Simon Schama's three volume History of Britain... largely, I've come away feeling incredibly lucky to have come out of the big genetic lottery in Southern England... I don't think I've contributed enough in order to be "proud" of it yet. I didn't choose to be born here and I find it hard to understand how anyone can have pride in something they didn't choose to be.
