^ as always, seckle's got it goin on.
Look here's the deal: mercury needs C&S, artists who ALREADY have a sizeably amount of cred and history, waaaaaaaaay more than C&S need them. Mercury's most likely gonna want a 360 deal in which they take percentages of touring, licensing, merch sales, etc-- it's no longer just about record releases for labels, as they can't sell recorded media to save their tails.
Oh yeah, that-- chances are C&S will be aorund much longer than mercury records.
So basically, if they signed the kind of deal that gets signed w/ majors these days, it gets them a larger promotions department and maybe some up-front cash while not having to give much up. It also means ins to more songwriting/remixing gigs, which PUT FOOD ON THE TABLE. like 10 years down the line, put food on the table.
So basically, their hustle is workin' for them. Had they stayed on RAM, there'd still be a ton of punters raggin on on both sides about Eastern Jam and Saxon. Clearly signing up with mercury hasn't changed that. Hopefully it's given them more of what they need at this stage as artists, and doesn't cost them too much.
But either way, it looks like a good move for them. And the fact that it's coming w/ love from RAM is great as well-- you can be sure that they'll get a nice if big tracks like "dumplin' riddim" are re-released.

Well said.
Plus I hadn't thought about the potential for re-presses on RAM's part.

fuck this and fuck trying to find an excuse for everything.
chase & status have been "pendulum part deux" for a while. anyone who considered them underground has no clue what they're talking about. I'm not surprised about this move.. AT ALL.
their dubstep songs seemed better than average because you had the hype of having c&s switching from dnb to dubstep (oh my liege you join our noble cause!). "bits" was the only spectacular thing and it's forthcoming (THANK GOD NOT ON MERCURY). after that, they used the same bass presets to make saxon, eastern jam, madhouse and running. catchy tunes, buuuuut other ppl would've eventually produced something similar.
as for mercury records - look at the artists they sign. they're an industry, man! RAM was Andy C's label and any dnb head knows about them. how much more could they sell under mercury and TO WHOM? they'll just have to produce more and the quality will go dooooooown.

but but but
what if the music is bad and it's harder to escape due to being on a major?
i find it hard enough to avoid pendulum as it is

none whatsoever, i guarantee that nobody can give you a credible example of how this will damage "the scene" it's just they aren't avant garde enough.

see being avant-garde for the pure sake of being avant-garde can be a problem in itself. if they do what they do to their OWN standard consistently...then that's all that should matter imo. If Mr. Johnson dictates what sort of music they make then it's a problem. Or am I just stating the obvious?

yes. i was being sarcastic. what i meant was they arn't avant garde enough for the boring elitist nerds who think they're cool and are mad that they cant dance.

Hooray for them. They can conquer anything they turn their hands to. I just hope they're smart with it and churn out some clever, solid tunes. I won't lie loved their liquid D&B, their jump up D&B and every damn one of their dubstep tunes. Who wouldn't want to have produced a tune like saxon? Imagine having made a tune for a scene you weren't even initially a part of that just burns the rave down everytime. I say hooray for them and give us 'bits'. Now.

seckle wrote:spiderman wrote:Piston wrote:majors want singles and songs rather than pieces of music
this is what i mean, the pressure of the majors kind of restrict artists so they wont be making stuff for the same crowd they started off, so that in itself distances them.

they've been at it a long time, so as people have said...fair play and the best of luck to them.
my only worry would be the way many of these major labels view electronica these days (with the exception of maybe XL recordings, warp and one or two others, who've done it right). they view it as mostly disposable music. music that won't necessarily make a gigantic truck of money initially, but over the course of 10 years, will make them their money back for their catalog.
traditionally, they give a boatload of money to brand new electronica/dance signings (especially for the the first few singles, or first album) and then slowly put them out down the back alley.
its called a "shotgun" deal. pump the hell out of the 1st album...make sure there's radio singles, touring, even a video, ride it out as long as it lasts, and then choke(reduce all promotion).....2nd album.....choke again....3rd album....done...finished. rinse and repeat for the next decade.
if you think i'm talking S then look at the examples in the last 20years (and these are just electronica/dance). look at prodigy, fatboy slim, chemicalbros, basement jaxx, craig david, or roni size. look at how the major labels treated jungle and 2step!

generally agree, although not with your examples! after their first album, every chemical brothers album went to number 1, and the same for the prodigy. fatboy slim and basement jaxx have been at least top 20 every time...

Thing is, now they'll actually be required to clear samples... which basically means their entire music making process will come down to how creative they themselves are when it comes to recording real musicians.
So basically, it'll be shit.
Good riddance.
That said, I'd have signed that deal too.

I don't think fistpumping and pogoing to a bunch of midrange nonsense constitutes 'dancing'.

Congrats to them, for damn sure. and Biggups to Mercury for takeing the chance on them.
I don't get the hate. They have been given an op. to move forward with their career. This is what put food on their table, and if they want to cointunue to do so, they've got to secure themselves signing to major label is the way forward for such things. the ability to be flexible is essential if you want to move forward as an entertainer.
Also, they've done the dnb thing, they touched on the club shit & even kept their debut album on our level (even though the album is as pop as breakbeats get}they're going into diffrent waters branching out in a diffrent world then the (for lack of a better term}"underground", plus the doors this will open for them are endless now. /
