Cheap lol.
But seriously, underground, mainstream, crossover.. who gives a fuck?
Make, play, promote and listen to music you wanna hear, don't fuck anyone else over and go out of your way to get paid fairly for the work you're putting in.
It's not that complicated really.
Noto to mention that bracketing any sort of sponsorship/endorsement from established brands as 'evil-corporations-come-to-soil-MY-Dubstep' is 6th form politics at it's worst.
Case in point - Red Bull are a fucking enormous multi-national with hundreds of millions of pounds at their disposal for marketing but their music academies are run by people who seriously know their shit, endorsed by people the calibre of Mala and Martyn (coincidentally 2 aretists who strike me as pretty focussed on artistic integrity), and provide an amazing platform for up and comers.
(No i don't work for red bull, rbma is just the first example that springs to mind)

haha i was gonna cite redbull, but because of their stuff in mountain biking! because of their patronage there's plenty of people who are able to make a living throwing themselves off cliffs on a bike who would otherwise not be. or the mercury music prize - a prize sponsored by a telephone company (now a part of Virgin media in the UK i think) which has been bringing independent music up for years...

^^^^I have worked with Redbull before and can say they an exception to the rule...they have a little different interpretation. Hat's off to the Music Academy.

In general tho the co-opting of a culture by mega-corp's is not too healthy....Look at how hip-hop started and where it is now...

"family" means not holding our tongue when we see vultures circling.

the ones "joining teams" are those who now rep a corporate logo.

ive had issues with corporatism since before "dubstep"... so all of a sudden they BUY my silence cause they are "FAMILY" now too ??? lol please...

desperate? lol, nah..... some principles are worth fighting for and dont have a price on them.

again, mad love to all the artists gettin paid, nothing but love & support from me. but im able to seperate that from the corporations, and will gladly go to a scion party and say fuck toyota at the same time.....

Its not hating or crybaby whining to question, its crybaby whining when you start blaming them for "your" scene not going in the direction you want.

nobody is saying not to support the artists you love , or to not go to a show if its free and the lineup is dope

go party ! by all means ! bruk the fuck out !!

but seriously, SERIOUSLY guys. when it all comes down to it , do you really feel ok deep down defending a giant multi billion dollar corporation who's obviously trying to do some wierd subconscious marketing scheme by infiltrating our scene ????

do you really feel ok defending that shit ? im sorry i take the side of pure underground musical love anytime over a corporate dollar sign, even if their party is free

dont forget , i said go to the party if you want, im not hating on going to the party

Ok, interesting translation you did there. I'm curious what you will extrapolate from this:

:chips:

(No doubt you will assume its a message to and about you)
lol.... so what did your post mean? you have anything of substance to add or you just trolling?

since you bring up french fries, would people take issue with mcdonalds throwing a dubstep party? like they have a new salad and want to do some nontraditional advertising.... mcdonalds dubstep? whats the difference? dont be fooled, scion is toyota. and red bull is the largest company in austria. 3 BILLION cans sold annually. where does the line get drawn? should it get drawn?

is it really THAT simple? if i have enough finances i can buy myself legitimacy in any culture i want? with zero resistance?

hitting people on the dancefloor can't be helped and doesn't really have anything to do with being mainstream. i watch where i'm going knowing i'll get smacked in to if i don't. as for Scion, i think it's great. the more people, the better. if you're there to dance and have fun, it shouldn't matter where you came from. i have to travel far to go to an event. it wouldn't bother me if it was more widespread. it's still the same music. anyone that would like it less because of popularity isn't really true to it in the first place. people bring money. money is good. that's how i feel anway. =]

nice edit lol.

im not "blaming" them for shit. im also not mad at how things are going.

in fact i think things are so awesome right now that we can tell them to fuck off and not think twice.

time will tell, & sooner than later they will be out of this market (when the parent companies realize its all a big waste of money for them) , but while they are around, ima tell them how i feel...

i'm feelin' the need to express my distaste for corporations throwing dubstep shows.

Scion has done a few tours in the states now, and although they tend to book good dj's and producers, they go about throwing their events in mainstream clubs (at least in los angeles) that attract people in to dubstep that are not about the music at all, but instead about the trend. These types of mainstream venues tend to pull in crowds that have no love for the music subculture they are jumping into, and therefore do not treat the community with respect.

This leaves our scene open to more violence and drama at parties than would happen if it were kept as an underground, word of mouth community. At the recent scion show in Los Angeles there was a number of fights, people shoving other people around and elbowing on the dance floor, people throwing food at each other, and other behavior that just demonstrates a blatant disregard for the actual dubstep community. When the true LA dubstep promoters throw their parties, even at 800 person warehouse shows, it's still a family thing. It's still got good vibes where people are coming together for the common love of something, and are unified by that common love. At mainstream venues there is no community or common love, just wolves out for their night of hunting.

I have been partying in LA for over 10 years now, and from what I have seen the most violence always occurs at events where corporations like clear channel get involved and try to blow the spot up and cash out on our movement. In fact, the drum and bass scene here was greatly effected by a violent murder that happened at a clear channel venue.

The recent scion tour was linked to clear channel and utilized a number of clear channel venues, and anyone who knows about clear channel knows they are just one of those corporate vampires who feeds off the vulnerability of the masses. They control a huge chunk of the american media and have repeatedly demonstrated that they have no respect for the underground culture that fuels our music. If they had respect for the music and culture they would go about getting involved in a way that doesn't blow the spot out of proportion all quick-like, but instead feeds it as it grows and develops.

i know that these types of tours are appealing to performers as they get to travel and are paid very well, but i would strongly encourage any dj that is offered the opportunity to think thoroughly about what they are doing to the culture by perpetuating corporate involvement. corporate parties like this put a mainstream magnifying glass on our tightly knit subculture which quickly blows it up and burns it out, and in the long run leaves the true soldiers high and dry.

i am not saying that mainstream is bad, or that dubstep should be kept a secret. But what i AM saying is that we should not allow the direction of our music and culture to be controlled by corporations who have no genuine connection to it. We should be supporting each other and sticking together, keeping it in the hands of the community and keeping it real.. so that WE are the ones who benefit for the long haul when dubstep comes up.

just my $0.02 .. take it or leave it ..
Very well said amy! I can't stand these moronic-thuggish-ruggish to punkrock cats coming out and showing NO respect to the dubstep community and making it worst for the rest of us. This is what kills the scene and ereyone around it. I did and did NOT enjoy the joker show this past week. Why? I was standing up by the stage and some moronic idiot comes out of nowhere, starts dancing by pushing me. I asked him nicely about 4-5 times to "please stop pushing while you are dancing" then he continues it. By the 6th time, I asked him again and he calls me a "homophobe." right then an there, I had my fists cluntched and rdy to brawl cause him and his boys got up in my face so i took my palm to his homies face and said "Back the fuck up bitch"While this whole thing is going on, I asked the guy "Do you see anyone else doing the same thing your doing" and he replies with "stfu" If homie wanted to brawl, I aint with it but, if it comes at me, I aint gonna bitch out. Imma brawl with the fool. But srsly tho, YOU COME CORRECT OR YOU DONT COME AT ALL! this is why events NEED to be 21+!!! maturity level of the crowd is whack when it is 18+. The dubstep scene doesnt need a buncha fuckin morons ruining the scene. Im sorry! shit like this pisses me off.

*sigh*

are you guys really complaining about the conduct of people at a FREE show, that's 18+, in west hollywood?? for god's sake, all people do is party there. and do you think if they're going to get an extra $10-$15 to spend on booze they're going to give a fuck whose performing or how they're acting around "real fans"?

i happen to be a fan of zomby and joker, but if i wasn't and wanted something to do on wednesday, i probably would've gone to the show. i'm sure quite a few people were there not knowing what was even going on, and were just happy to be out partying.

if getting bumped into more often or having a little bit more beer spilled on you is really that big of an issue, don't go to these kinds of events. you should know what to expect by now. there will always be underground promoters doing their thing and throwing parties where you know the vibe will be positive and progressive.

i highly doubt any of the "moronic-thuggish-ruggish" folks are going to start invading any and all dubstep events in la because scion threw some free ones at a popular club. again, those people are probably there because the SHIT WAS FREE.

I agree darksteppa... but you don't have to under 21+ to be an asshole.. thats for sure..

age is not the issue here, it's the mentality of the newer people that do not understanding whats going on..

skream was 18+, and the same shit was not going down.. but that show was all dubstep heads for the most part, and everyone there was there for the music.. not coz it was a free show, and something to do ...

nothing against free shows either, when promoted proper, they can be dope too.. like the ventura beach parties..

but when you blindly market a show towards a certain age demographic, just to make sure that your corporate event has people to see the logo's, you tend to get the kind of people that you really rather not hang out with..

I like when a dubstep head turns the music on to a friend or two at a time.. maybe bring a new head to a show.. thats the way you make it bigger, properly..

I make dubstep coz I love to make music and have been doing it for a long time... I don't do it for the fame, girls, cash, or gigs or any of that shit.. I do it, coz thats what I do.. if in the end I get some of the it's just a bonus..

no matter what, I will always make music.. You can love it, hate it, trash it, treasure it, pay for it or steal it.. I'll still make it..

and I think all rave shows should be all ages, coz thats how I go into the culture anyway... 15 y/o wit glowsticks and a sm:)e
