Assume i'm completely new to rap/hip-hop (i practically am), what would be the ONE album you would tell me to listen to from start to finish, one that represents everything you love about the genre? Something you think can convert a layman like me?

Mobb Deep - the infamous- Some of the best verses in the history of hip hop. Beats that are stripped down but still classics
A Tribe Called Quest - Midnight Marauders - Every song on this album is a classic.

That's dated? how is that album any less dated than infamous or illmatic or any other classic album?

I'd say start with the obligatory Nas - Illmatic, then check out A Tribe Called Quest - Low End Theory, Wu-Tang - 36 Chambers and OutKast - ATLiens after that. There's so many others I'd recommend to, just to have a solid foundation of understanding: The Chronic, Infamous, Only Built 4 Cuban Linx, Fear of a Black Planet, AmeriKKKa's Most Wanted, Mama Said Knock You Out... damn hip hop, why you got so many classics?
one for all my fellow instrumental enthusiasts out there
lovely stuff

Sick, Bela.
Worth the $5 for that one tune and the cover art alone!
Edit - Fuck Paypal though. They can suck out.

best hip hop album (& just album) of all time imo is liquid swords
but for a beginner id probably say the best album to listen to is either pete rock & cl smooth "mecca and the soul brother" gangstarr "full clip" (comp album) or slum village "fantastic vol 2"
i wouldnt even try to listen to any golden age stuff like stetsasonic/ultramagnetic or early krs1 shit, b/c its so old most people have difficulty appreciating it
