the number of my childhood home in Woolooware Road, Cronulla
at the end of a cliffy peninsular jutting into a beautiful estuarine valley long inundated by rising ocean,
eastern views to the dark blue Tasman Sea, western view up the sunset-infused waterway,
surrounded by intact bushland of contorted angophora, banksia & flannel flowers,
then still inhabited by blue-tongue lizards and small marsupials
and scattered throughout the bush, middens of oyster shells left from thousands of years of aboriginal feasts,
the rocky clifftops carved to catch water while the karadji men sat spotting prey for the fishers below
and under sandstone overhangs, aboriginal drawings of sealife...rays, sharks, dolphins & fish.

almost all gone now, covered by whitefella "civilization" & the crush of humanity

no room for trees, middens disposed of, wildflower gullies filled & built over
big empty houses, fully capitalizing the exorbitant land values,
ignorant of the beauty they've replaced.
