lol i didn't mean it for that reason. it was just annoying as fuck and about as funny as AIDS is (when you actually stop to think about the reality of it anyway)dr ddd wrote:very valid point badger - i never realised you meant it for that reason tbh... but i have to stop and agree with you.badger wrote:know you know how i feel about stockholm syndromedr ddd wrote:wishing people wouldnt treat aids as some big joke... if someone could explain to me why they find it amusing to accuse each other of it and bandy it around as if they're talking about headlice when in fact it is a debilitating disease that destroys lives and families, i would appreciate it.i don't think it's remotely a laughing matter, whatever way you look at it

i agree there ddd. and because our western culture has split people with AIDS into "Us v. them" its become really easy to be cavalier about it....and to assume that AIDS = Them and no one has to worry about it. If AIDS had epidemic status in the Western Civ nations the way it does in Africa, it might be back on the forefront. As long as Africa/Asia seem to be the only ones suffering, we can re-focus on relevant diseases.....like autism. Not saying autism isn't a big deal but.....we never did find that cure for AIDS... *shrugs*dr ddd wrote:wishing people wouldnt treat aids as some big joke... if someone could explain to me why they find it amusing to accuse each other of it and bandy it around as if they're talking about headlice when in fact it is a debilitating disease that destroys lives and families, i would appreciate it.i don't think it's remotely a laughing matter, whatever way you look at it

Yeah I guess thats true, so I'm going to apologise for the times I used it as a diss to the medical-related threads. I was waiting for somebody to bring it up so we could all stop.bellybelle wrote:i agree there ddd. and because our western culture has split people with AIDS into "Us v. them" its become really easy to be cavalier about it....and to assume that AIDS = Them and no one has to worry about it. i think it runs on an even more individual level than that... i know a hell of a lot of people who are HIV positive and have AIDS... a very close friend's mother is one of the longest living sufferers in the UK and has been on experimental drug treatments for the last 10years - growing up and living that way all your life is difficult for both mother and daughter in any society. I certainly dont think of it as exclusive to Africa/Asia.bellybelle wrote:i agree there ddd. and because our western culture has split people with AIDS into "Us v. them" its become really easy to be cavalier about it....and to assume that AIDS = Them and no one has to worry about it. I think the problem with human nature is that unless some people see it with their own eyes, they just dont have the empathy to comprehend the true significance of some of the stuff they can brush off in the excuse of humour. It may be just because it's something i feel very strongly about through my experience and because I've always been directly involved with it, but I cant believe that people are that unaware of what is truely involved.
I do find it a bit sick when people bandy it about to be honest.... it happens all over the place and I just dont get why.
