And fwiw there was a year and a half or so between his first ep and smans...from what I remember his label shelved the first one for a year until he tossed it online because it wasn't commercial enough...same with his solo album. I assume a few people were fired in the resulting shit storm. I don't think it's that far fetched to improve that drastically if you were grinding out production the whole time.

What I find strange is the fact that he claimed he did it 'at some appartment, untreated room with blown up KRK's'. The mix is perfectly put together, how can you even work in mono? (he said one of the speakers was blown up). Something doesn't fit on there.

Probably exegeration. SMANS falls apart in mono tbf. Also it was mastered professionally, and it wouldn't surprise me if deadmu5 had a hand in finalising it before that.

Made this with FL studio, the growls were made with Fruity DX10, a Parametric EQ2 and a Bloody Overdrive, and that's it! I know Skrillex uses FM8 but you don't really need that synth specifically to make growls since you can pretty much recreate them in any FM synth (even though FM8 is a fantastic synth and you can pretty much create any sound in it too!)

Klinkt niet slecht mr.53 doesnt sound bad at all

Something I'm working on atm, all growls and stuff were made with massive, FM8, sytrus and harmless. I like to diversify. Little bit skrillex-y I guess.

I've never used DX10 - always overlooked it in FL, would be interested in a small tutorial and/or screenshots.

I'm going to tell you guys how it really is.
Just after Sonny (Skrillex) released his first EP, which he gave out for free and received critical acclaim Joel (Deadmau5) signed him to release on Mau5trap.
Joel payed Noisia to learn Sonny sound design and mixdown for his new EP, so Sonny visited Noisias studio in The Netherlands for a month or so (not sure).
Sonny does indeed produce his own music, but he have learned a LOT from Noisia, especially sound design. FM8 also turn out to be one of Noisias synths of choice.

Regardless if there's any truth to this just imagine spending a month in the studio with Noisia. I dare say anyone with a sliver of talent could become famous like that within the EDM scene. Because lets face it; production is the only thing you really need to make it.

I'm pretty sure it's been this way as long as I've been a member, and I'm sure probably longer than that too.
