I swear VIVEK bigged up Mala at various points throughout the night. Strange, all this.

If the differences were not amicable (perhaps just a different idea on where they want to go musically?) do you really think Vivek would have dropped Stand Against War the other night...

Vivek is building his own Sound system he said previously on Facebook.
I hate to speculate but maybe Mala living in Belgium and having a 2nd child has something to do with it.

Nothing official announced really, but as I saw it, it was a good year coming when it finally had the last nail hammered in when mass closed its doors.
2005-2009, dubstep was new, growing and exciting. The best explanation ive heard about this time (and ive thought this myself before completely) is how ramadanman explained it in his red bull interview, if you were standing at a bus stop and you overheard some guys talking about dubstep, you would TOTALLY go over and say hello! Half the time you had bumped into them before at DMZ/fwd, and even if not who the hell cared THEY WERE INTO DUBSTEP!! But yeah, cos of this the whole vibe and the whole point of DMZ was maaaximum hype. The DMZ gang bringing in unbeleivable line ups time after time (the birthday specials?? Faaarking hell...greatest dubstep line ups that will ever happen. Period.) this combined with MCs all night, hyping every set to the fullest, T-shirts on sale with line ups on them...this was the era of hype. And it was good.
Come end of 09/start of 2010, and it was beginning to change. DMZ became well known, dubstep was definitely well known, and it started to attract hipsters. For want of a better word. Couldnt believe my eyes the first time I saw a gang of over dressed nu-rave sparkly pink lycra children sitting on the floor in the main spiral staircase all night. Was unreal. So yeah, the vibe began to change. Whereas from 06-09, EVERY single person in the place knew everything there was to know about the music, in '10 there was an influx of new people - some hearing a new exciting sound, hats off to them - and some getting in on the current cool thing...fuck them to their graves.
I dont honestly think a real DMZ happened after 2010. Went to a couple during 2011 I think, and both were 100% unrecognisable from what I grew up with. As in, COMPLETELY different. Dont even think for a second they had anything in common...dickheads abound, sweaty topless twats swinging their shirts above their head while gurning back at the crowd from the bit of stack they had climbed on to...it was long since dead. No vibe that had any relation to what it was.
And then mass closed...thank fuck. Might have saved a last couple of painful to watch deaththrows of a night, as DMZ ceased to be a regular night forever.
DMZ as it was literally couldnt exist again. Ever. The actual fundamental essence of DMZ was (and forever will be) the unbelievable hype reached at a night that was populated entirely by people that knew how special what they were experiencing was. People trying to get the sound heard as far and wide as possible, because we all knew that what we had was better than anything else on the planet. You cant recreate that. If the DMZ camp tried to start up something similar again somewhere else, it would be a mess within 2 sessions I think. As its wall to wall packed full of people on a totally different vibe to how it was...
The reason why system seemed so special to me when i first went, was for a glimmer of that early dmz vibe being captured. The total lack of publicity of the night meant that, for a while at least, it was attended by those in the know. People that know the history of the sound and want to capture that feeling again...alas itll never quite do it. Simply due to the fact that the world around it has changed. You cant hype dubstep anymore! The excitement has gone, and all that is left (for me) was a warm nostalgia with hearing classic plates from 2005-09 on an enormous rig in a dark room you can smoke it, and now the largest part of that has been stripped away again my malas departure. Really sad times in my opinion. Youngsta and others will tear the dance up im sure, but in a slightly different way...theres a connection with mala. Anyone that knows why, just...knows why.
And lol, that post was meant to be like 2 lines long. But as soon as I think about early DMZs I just get upset to be perfectly honest these days. But only for the lack of something that was good...can never complain about that.

yeah i see exactly where you are coming from, i suppose i am forever the optimist in this situation. I like the idea of SYSTEM, and the idea of building your own sound system, maybe more equivalent nights will start. this may strip some of the hype and simply leave a night where the people that reach get 2-3 artists and the focus is just on the music. A DMZ system, or going back in time a skull disco rig would be so good

what wiggles said is exactly why i want to go to system
i was too young for mass or anything when it was happening, sounds like exactly the kind of vibes i'd want in a night though

Water on the decks during Kryptic Minds killed DMZ.

exactly this. i had the opportunity to see mala here in iceland in 2007 which exposed me to dubstep. couldn't really get involved with DMZ due to distance, but i felt that SYSTEM was my chance to hear the sound the way it's meant to be heard, maybe recapture those vibes i wasn't able to experience. i'm just grateful that i was able to attend it earlier this year. it disappoints me that he's leaving but it'll carry on..

I honestly can't say that Mala's absence took anything away from System on Saturday. It was as good as I remember from the first and second sessions.

DMZ used to gather a big chunk of this forum. Remember when a bunch of people from the state side came over? Right now System is perhaps the only night that gets people traveling from distant places to experience again what we thought was gone. I hope Mala's departure won't kill it.
