lol no

putin is hitler 2.0, i know because hilary clinton said so
Nigel Farage is more a Sarah Palin type. Whipping the nationalist dummies into fervor with his shunning of liberal ideologies and finger pointing at the immigrants.

Crazy that the national front got 25% of the vote in France.

Looks like this has been a trend all around Europe, here in DK for example the Danish People's Party (pretty similar) got 26,7% of the votes making them by far the biggest winner

True but they're all connected tho, the parliament holds the (some) legislative power

The EU as an institution is so god damn confusing overall though, to the point it's no wonder a lot of the EU-skeptical parties have gained traction imo.
Keeping track of what goes on in the parliament/council/commission is pretty hard for the individual voter. I sympathize with the frustrated voters who feel like their voice isn't being heard, it's just a shame that the far right wing parties offer the easiest 'solution' as for what to do about it (leave the EU).

Edit: Err, sorry, should probably have merged those two posts

I wouldn't go that far. EPP has the new majority and if they hold their promise Juncker is probably gonna preside the commission.

If Schultz gets the presidency I can't predict the amount of outrage it's gonna cause, basically Farrage and all the ppl who pointed out the democracy deficit of the EU will be proven right.

FUN FACT - Last time they made a big showing, Laurent Garnier got really pissed off and did a protest mix for BBC Radio. It ended up being the 5th disc in his Excess Baggage series.

The fact Farage was made into an Alan Partridge type monger by the media and social networks probably helped him a lot. Majority of people who don't have a clue about politics would probably vote for him cause hes really hated.. "for the bants". General public are fucking morons so coming across as an incompetent twat worked out well for him.

Hopefully they fall back to being irrelevant by the time general election comes round next year, then he'll no doubt be on I'm A Celeb or some bullshit like that.

it has a more consultative role. and iirc can't do shit without the approval of the commission

are you guys really surprised/wondering why we get these results?

gee i wonder if the EU enforced austerity policies that not only didn't change a thing on unemployment rates, purchasing power dropping, etc and overall probably worsened the crisis have anything to do with this "trend"

or maybe it's the traditional parties quickly losing any sort of credibility? yes, Farage or Le Pen are populists buffoons, no, i honestly can't find a reason why they're any worse than Cameron or Hollande

these results shouldn't come as a surprise, and unless the real underlying issues (hint: it's not immigration) are addressed, UKIP, National Front and populists all over Europe will keep on getting more people attracted to their anti-EU demagogy...

Look at the media reactions in France. It's appalling. They are blaming it all on the voters' stupidity.

....And they continue to prove the FN right without even noticing it

I'm really worried about what will happen in 2017 (Presidential elections) tbf. Been worried about it for some time but it's only increasing

^ Sarkozy vol. 2.

Valls' career is getting killed by the minute.
Flambi is the worst thing that has happened to france since Robbespierre.
Marine won't get voted because of commies preferring to vote for Sarko.
Modem is dead.
And the UMP has nobody else to offer.

Nah, I don't think Sarkozy will get president again. They're just polls obviously, but polls consistently show that people won't vote for Sarkozy, even amongst UMP voters. Hopefully he'll be put in jail until then.
Wouldn't call "Flambi" the worst thing for France, though I certainly do not agree with what he's doing - he's just part of the same thing that has been going on for decades now. Not better nor worse - same. Better than Sarkozy though.
To me it'll be Valls v Le Pen, and I'm quite frightened what the result might be.

that's France's reputation, but I think it's partly false. maximum individual income rate is 45% here - from what I could gather briefly on the Internet, it is exactly the same in Germany, and lower than in countries such as Canada, Japan, Spain, Denmark, Sweden, ...

that's not exactly right - it is actually 75%, but for income above 1,000,000 € (possibly more). It also only applies this year, as an emergency measure (though it's actually completely worthless. Was more of a symbol for Hollande to make believe he applied left-wing policies than anything else). If I'm not wrong, it is unconstitutional here for the total income tax to get higher than 50%
