whats wrong with booing the national anthem and shouting abuse?
adds intensity and passion
Insults between fans are all well and good, it's the fact that football fans can't be trusted to keep it to just insults about the game/team or even just to words. Booing a player who's wronged your team is perfectly natural... booing a national anthem or yelling racist abuse across the stands is just fucking moronic jingoism. I'd boo half the players on the Portuguese team, but will happily admit Portugal's a fucking beautiful country filled with rather nice people. It's about perspective. Of course, all the booing in the world would be fine if everyone knew that eventually someone in the crowd will reach the end of their capacity to store meaningless insults and punch someone. That someone always seems to exist in football crowds.

Even when you have an ongoing war with a foreign country, it needn't *ever* get any further than words in the stands. When my older brother was a kid, my Dad took him to see England Vs Ireland at Twickenham in the [then] 5 Nations. It was pretty much at he height of The Troubles and the people behind my Dad spent the whole game, which England won, making *very* borderline jokes about bombing the stadium, English scum etc... my Dad still says it's the only time he's ever been worried about violence in a rugby crowd. At some point in the second half, one of them started tapping my Dad on the shoulder after England had scored a try "Hey, English.."; he ignored them thinking he really didn't need to be getting into a dodgy situation with his little boy next to him... "Hey, English..." taps again.. my Dad finally nervously turned round... "Hey, English.... you want some whisky?"

Football's meatheadedness is entirely of its own making. People are more than capable of being ludicrously competitive and tribalistic without ever raising their fists. That's supposed to be what competitive sport is all about. If you want to physically fight for a cause, join a fucking army.

yeah im not talking about fighting. i personally dont like to see violence at football.
if its outside the game and two ppl want to fight then i dont really care as long as it doesnt involve me and both parties want a fight rather than one just attacking the other
im sure the police will handle it and the ppl involved are probably idiots anyway
it just doesnt really bother me. i know im not going to be attacked unless i go out of my way to confront some bald bloke wearing stone island

not completely disagreeing with you but
in the army you are fighting for your country, in this case you are fighting for your locality
whats the difference?

but there's nothing wrong with the insulting chanting.
i think the goading and winding up is part of what makes football the sport it is

tbh the whole reason i even got into football as a kid, hearing all the chants and really feeling part of it- your lot and their lot. I grew to appreciate watching great football too but for me it can be a great game but if the crowd is dead then it isn't nearly as fun as a 0-0 where everyone is really up for it and passions run high.

But yeah on that note yesterday was incredible. I've never witnessed anything like the first ten minutes in the city end- absolute pandemonium when the second goal went in. I reckon I even saw a few tears from my old man for the first time on my life. That to me is what football is all about.

But yeah back to the 15 arsenal fans in the city end- I don't think anyone here would react too kindly to someone next to you jumping up and down and making wanker signs. I doubt I'd fight them, just cowardly given them an elbow in the back or something- but then a lot of people are a bit more angry and red blooded than me.

I was also wondering how they got in seeing as you had to physically go to the ticket office to get them this time round, especially in a block. I'm thinking they must have got them off one of the corporate season ticket holders via a tout.

Yes we won nothing this year. We cant, are not entitled to win silverware every year.

We need to ban any fans of Man Utd, Arsenal, Chelsea or Liverpool from this thread now because for real, the last 10 or so pages have been fucking painful reading.

You're all good teams and the banter has been fucking shocking.

Shut up.

That passion is exactly what football's about... I entirely agree. It's what all sport should be about and few manage to provoke.

What football isn't about is proving that passion through violence... it strikes me that people use the expectations of society as their excuse for all manner of stuff they secretly know is completely wrong. In this country we expect football fans to occasionally give each other a kicking, so they occasionally give each other a kicking. In some places they expect football fans to occasionally knife each other and maybe even shoot the odd player... and so they knife each other and maybe shoot the odd player. Other sports create the same passion (NBA, AFL and NFL certainly; Rugby to a slightly lesser extent around here maybe) but don't even require a concept of crowd segregation. They don't expect their fans to act like apes and everyone deals with it just fine - people still jump for joy and crumble into tears. Strangers still hug and insult each other. Passions are always going to spill over once in a while... and perhaps the Arsenal fans in question were being over the top, but it's very sad that football feels a need to segregate fans in the first place. Perhaps if it didn't, there wouldn't be such a problem because maybe everyone would accept more responsibility for their own actions rather than creating a self-excusing logic that might lead one to believe that anyone dishing out a "good kicking" to someone who hasn't raised their fists isn't entirely to blame.

amazing! a bit gutted the match wasn't on later, would have been keen to watch. Great to see Athleti break the duopoly. I'll be gunning for them hard next weekend.

RE: Garethom's comments - would be a good idea to try and curb these barbs aimed between the big clubs as they are perpetual arguments that never reach a conclusion and must be boring to read.

DJoe, my comment yesterday was a bit overly aggressive - I was pretty drunk my bad.

I won't carp on about this but it feels AMAZING still today. after the struggle of the last 9, to have some of that weight lifted makes this easily the most satisfying thing arsenal have won for me, very optimistic for next season >>

Roll on UCL final, championship playoff final and the world cup <3
