Okay really went back to the drawing board on my reeses, and I'm fairly pleased with this latest effort; the track in my sig. If there's any interest, I wouldn't mind detailing the process

Ahh this is sick! Good work! Duplicating and saturating the reece would make it sicker, how did you create this?

ok in massive i had two oscillators on sawwave normal detune like -20 plus 20 centsand the third is a sine send directly to the second filter.freq split after massive into two dif midranges and one sub.
-one midrange got a second bandpass filter movement (tal filter 2) after the filtermovement from massive(was nothing special some lowpass to bandpass),some white noise after the filter some eq to make it smoother and at the end a slight chorus
-the other one is just some eqing after the massive sound
then i played a some basslines and bounced all the audio into a audiochannel and loaded dif loops into a sampler and place new basslines where i thought some gliding into higher or lower octaves could work.
added some filters in the sampler thats pretty much it so far

I'm able to get a good bass reese and process it a fair amount at this point :
But I can't give it that sexy filter movement that alot of you are able to do, are these lp filter sweeps that give it that "ripping" sound?

I like that one, the riff is cool too. Try bandpass filters for the 'ripping' and gnarlier movements. I always put at least 2 notch filters on my reeses too, love what they do to the sound

Heres my latest reece based track. All the sounds are from one reece patch and just plenty of fucking about with effects. The reece patch was made in massive and resampled into kontakt, all filter movement is done using volcano 2,kontakts filters and logics autofilter.Distortion used was literally just camel phat and a touch of bitcrushing.
Reverb and delay used sparingly on all variations of patch,i think i just had them set up on a master effects buss and used sends. Soundcloud

I've made a pretty gnarly sounding reese bass and it was quite simple to make. You can hear it in the breakdown of this track: Soundcloud
I made it in massive. For the reese patch I used 3 saw waves, two of which were detuned to -20ct and +20ct. I routed them to a notch filter that had some automation. I also added some distortion in the fx as well as chorus and EQ boosted up the highs a tad. I also put in some hardclipper or sine shaper (i can't remember which but both will make the sound stick out more). I then added more voices and detuned it more. Something that I should've done but didn't was to use multiband fx to put a stereo plugin on the highs but oh well :/
I then used massive again to create a sine wave playing the same notes as the reese.
I grouped these two tracks together and placed Fab Filter volcano and Fab Filter distortion on the group. to start off I had the distortion plugin off because I wanted to create the movement first. In Volcano, I used all 4 filters. The first was a low pass 24db and the other 3 were bandpass 24db. The spacing is important for the filters. The general idea was to use the lowpass filter to let the sub through and some lower frequencies and then use the bandpass filters on the crunchier frequencies of the sound. To get the movement I used the link function and recorded myself moving all four filters together in unison the way I wanted to to get the sound that I had in my head. Its a really fun and focused way to get the sound you want and it's a pretty simple process. It's all about the way you move the filters combined with what midi you are playing. I used lots of pitchbends and what not and just recorded a bunch of automations and used my favorites in the track. Its good fun!
Also one important thing to remember is on the reese bass track I EQed out space for the lows (high-pass at around 120 hz) and on the sub track I EQed out the highs (low-pass at around 80hz). Not doing this will make the sound complete shit
After I got the movement I wanted I turned on the distortion plugin and distorted to taste The key to the distortion and the good thing about the fab filter plugin is to use different distortions on the different frequencies. I didn't use much on the lows but alot on the mids and a bit on the highs. I've heard that using multiple distortion plugins in light fashion gives a better sound but I have yet to experiment with that.
The most important thing to cracking reese basses and making them sound good is to just have fun and not worry about the end results!
Hope I helped someone!
