Here's my first real attempt at reeses. Since I've been reading a lot of what's being posted here and wanted to try some things myself out, I created two different patches, one using a wavetable synthesizer with a "digital" sound -NI Massive- and another one using an analog soft synth (in this case I used Ableton's Analog). Most of the FX used in the two patches are more or less the same, except for a Chorus and a touch of Amp in the second one.

Which one do you think sounds "better"? They sound like two completely different sounds altogether although the principles for designing them were more or less the same.

I've followed a couple reese tutorials on youtube in the past. One for massive, one for operator. But I've read a shitload on here and on D.O.A...some of which still only makes partial sense to me cuz i haven't gone that deep yet. But, I decided to do a test and see how much of a twisty-neuro funk-reese I could make only using massive. no outside processing. no resampling. here's what i got:

Just taken it down to add more snap to the snare and fix a few volumes I noticed once it was up on soundcloud,

Made this reece from a patch I made in DIVA, then granulized over quite a few FL Studio sessions, then arranged it in Live

The track sounded better earlier imo from a mixdown standpoint.
you've removed all the bottom end now.
The reece sounded a lot fuller before.
I didn't think the mixdown was far off earlier and the reece sounded good albeit requiring a bit more filter movement at times.
Possibly a bit less repetition in the filter movement might help.
The mixdown sounds very flat now though.

I'm going to add some cleaner sub as I thought the initial stuff was a bit muddy,

I'll work some more on the mix down and compare it to the previous one

and thanks for the note about the filter movement, needs some more change ups

Re-created the sub bass and sub movement and fixed the mix down. Whats it sounding like on your end? Thanks for the responses, it helps having a fresh pair of ears I've got a bit close to the tune you know? Soundcloud

I tried searching for FM8 stuff on this board but it wouldn't let me search. Im just curious if anyone uses FM8 for their reese basses and if they find it to be "better" than other synths you may use?

Fm8 is actually very good at making reeces.Yeah it is just detuned saw waves and all that regurgitated nonsense BUT with fm8 you can use the operators to make some real nice movement within the reece.The only thing i find is it can sound a little too digital and lack a bit of warmth you get with subtractive synthesis.I shall upload a few patches if you like,i have massive banks of patches so will have to dig through.

This is one patch,i downloaded it a while back and just worked out my own reeces from there.This one i think shows the potential fm8 has for making reece sounds.Also you will notice what i mean by it lacking the warmth that you get with subtractive.

yes the yamaha can do reeces bass and it sounds so big! turn your sign waves into big powerful saws and then soften them up really carefully and then go bananas!
