Agreed, making people actually invest something in the music rather than just consume and throw away is a valuable attribute of the genre.

(I hope that makes sense, either way I agree with seckle's original point.)

Genre labels, like words, are inventions of necessity. And like life, a subgenre won't exist until there is an overwhelming need to distinguish it from its parent genre. I found this was appropriate for "Brostep," and sure enough, 2 years later people are using it transcontinentally (and here in Hawaii, too). Its actually got its own subsection in the Dubstep Wikipedia entry now.

I like to think of music as this ongoing evolution composed of all sorts of metaphorical animals we call "genres." Some wind up in forgotten cul-de-sacs and others thrive and carve the path for future species to exist. The genres that have their shit together and serve a purpose tend to thrive, whereas the ones that are made up by a dude on the internet for his own bemusement tend to fall to the wayside.

To continue the metaphor, I see dubstep as one of the most sentient of all musics; the tip of the spear of musical evolution, if you will. But as the human species is constantly evolving, something else is already in the works, soon to take dubstep's place, we just don't know what it is yet.

I like what I've heard from "future bass" and "future garage" (as well as a little moombahton now and then), but cmon, in 10 years those terms will be as meaningful as the term "future jazz" is now..

Except that doesn't work out and that Wikipedia page is fairly fucking dodgy in places (it also claims Vex'd did not focus on sub bass which is hilarious). Reznor has far more in common with Distance/Vex'd etc than he does Datsik or Excision. And I'm certain you'd find more people on this site who are fans of NIN than Excision. Manson is just shit but not particularly related to the brostep fans. Many of them liked stuff such as Bring Me the Horizon and My Chemical Romance before this.

In terms of splitting up genres it doesn't really matter what the fuck anything's called it depends on the discernible scenes. Quite frankly we all know dubstep has split into at least two scenes already which work almost entirely exclusively of one another. Most producers stick to one of the scenes, most DJs mix one of the scenes, a considerable proportion of fans only listen to one of the scenes. I mean the dubstep and future garage scenes have more overlap in terms of artists/DJs/fans than brostep does with dubstep these days. I'm not claiming there should be any official subgenres coined but anyone under the impression that Doctor P and Phaeleh belong to the same scene is deluded.
