Weird, never heard that before. I remember one particular interview where he was driving around with the interviewer, playing Jungle on the stereo. Maybe he's one of those people who sees D&B as being distinct from Jungle?

Was just thinking about early Timbaland stuff and Beep me 911 by Missy's got a pretty, halfstep beat which I can remember emulating when I was trying to make hip hop years ago. That tune's from 98, so certainly predates halfstep by quite a few years even if the bass isn't quite as developed as it is now.

Didn't think the tune at the beginning of the thread sounds like dubstep at all to be honest.

I remember actually watching an interview when he was big on reeces and just drum and bass influence in general about 6 years ago and they say "So clearly you're very influenced by dance music such as drum and bass". He cuts the person off abruptly and says "no I've never heard of drum and bass". Umm sure It would be great if he'd fess up, not only for honesty's sake but he could gain a lot of exposure for the genres in question which he's been "influenced" by. But then people wouldn't think he was so innovative, I guess. It's sad because as a great producer who is protective over his ideas... it's very ironic and a douchebag move to pull the same on other hard working producers.

Just an innocent question here: would you all say that autechre or aphex or someone was biting dubstep if they took it that route, or would you say this shit is dope? I don't see the difference? Is it just because you assume that timbaland may not admit where he got the sound?

I can only assume he only paid attention to what he heard as "Jungle", a term he most definitely knew. I mean, there's a 176bpm d&b track on one of his crew's lps, which he made!

The more I think about it, the more it looks like he just enjoys fucking with people, and I can kind of respect that

I think the fact is that in the future, there will be a few tracks featuring wobbly bass lines with airheaded corporate puppets singing over them.

It will be watered down as not to offend the mainstream sensibilities and then probably be forgotten about several years later, anyway. The mainstream is fickle and will see it as a novelty.

and "popular" grime and garage.

That is clearly not dubstep - I was really expecting to hear something that closely resembled the london sound too -- there's plenty of bad hiphop all over myspace that sounds just like this - typical half-time southern beat, some strings over a banging 808... nothing new here... don't mean to come off prickish but if you can't tell the difference between that timbo beat and the majority of dubstep then you are musically handicapped

Timbaland is shit... He can make catchy tunes that can be rinsed on commerical radio over and over for the masses to swallow.... couldnt care... very overrated i think, i'm not sure what the hype is about, cept his tunes are 'catchy'
