btw: mp3tag is a great tool to change your track's information before sending it off. I use it for every single mp3 I release!

aight, now i'm confused...i've been making music for ages but i've only gotten legit about it recently and made accounts on all the various places on the internet that enable people to give their tunes to the world and started getting involved in forums like this one right here (first time posting, yeh boi!)...and mabye i've got it twisted...

i've thrown a few things i've produced up on soundcloud/youtube, not the greatest things i've ever produced but considering the equipment i have, and the lack of time (i'm one month away from finishing year 12, woooooo!) i thought i would just show people the tip of the iceberg, and they would be impressed with what i can do considering the circumstances.
but do people give a shit about these circumstances?

without sounding arrogant, i know i can make music bangin harder than anything i've presented to the internet.
on the other hand, i don't have time to be a perfectionist in all facets of my life right now (even though deep down it's eating me up inside to NOT be a perfectionist...)

SO MY QUESTION IS...

as an aspiring musician, should i remove all my under-mixed/eq'd and under-edited tunes and wait until i have time for producing that first banger that gets things rolling?
or should i keep my works in progress (i can always jazz them up later anyway) and give people a first glimpse of what i can do?
am i cutting myself short by posting things i know i can do a better job at?

My advice would be to just put up the stuff you're 100% happy with - wait and wait and wait - hold fire on it till it's at a point where you can listen to it yourself 100 times and still enjoy it.

It doesn't have to be a "banger" per say (unless that's your style I guess) but I wouldn't put up anything that was under-mixed or under-edited. Why would you? Unless it's to post in the production forum, asking people specifically for advice - then nobody wants to wate time listening to something that's unfinished.

I'd imagine most people will expect to want to hear the finished item, since that's the piece that a label is going to invest in, I'd say.

Maybe if you build up a good close relationship with someone, you can send them stuff and ask for advice on finishing, or help mixing down etc - but really, people you send tunes for often barely have time to listen to a clip and feed back to you (most won't feed back) so why would they want to sit through unfinished stuff, have to feedback, in order just to have to wait even longer to get sent it again etc - I'd say unless your stuff was mind blowing, like properly out of this world good. So much so that a mere glimpse would send shivers down someone's spine - then chances are you should wait till you have finished tracks. Sure - upload clips once it's finished (I've stopped uploading whole tunes to soundcloud for now) but I'd say finish it.

And very few people care about the backstory - nobody has time to read a release sheet, and most who do, are unlikely to retain any sort of information, aside from the music and your producer name.

In my experience,the best way to send something over is firstly to ask them. Now i understand this may not be feasible in relation to DJ's, but in terms of producers and labels your best bet would be to drop them a PM first asking politely if its ok to send them over a demo. Think of it as sending a business letter; address the person in question by name, if you can't find it look around! If you send a covering letter and CV for work experience, espeically legal work experience, no firm will appreciate you addressing the letter as Dear Sir/Madam. Once you've been given the go ahead ask them how they would like the tracks sent over, if this was not already addressed in the initial email/PM. Then go ahead and sent your best tunes..! I've always followed this method and to this date i don't think i've ever not received an email back!

I have send tracks to the man himself, DFRNT, and i received a very positive email back. It may have not been what he was looking for 'Cut Music' but nevertheless he still gave his feedback, and it was not just a one line 'kool tune' I will be on contact shortly
