Also 50% of your crwod outside smoking cigarettes is bad for all the reasons mentioned but 50% of the crowd sat outside DMZ trying to "quietly" skin up is going to atract some unwanted attention...you can pop out for a straight but you cant really pop out for a spliff unless you are really tucked away.

Barman is a shit job. A SHIT JOB. I FUCKING HATED IT and coming home reeking of smoke made it ten times worse. I did it for a while because it was the only thing I could get. I dont think its fair to say "if you dont like it, then get a better job" (sounds very Thatcher-esque to me), what if there is nothing open to you, what if you rely on your wage to pay your bills and you cant do without two weeks/months/years wages while "between jobs"?

People should have the right to smoke. People should also have the right not to smoke. I'm all in favour of personal liberty - once that liberty does not encroach on the liberty of others. Passive smoke from other people breaches my liberty to not smoke at my favourite gigs, clubs. You (not you in particular Wiggle Baron, just anyone who's reading) want a smoke? Go outside and do it out there. It'll take you five minutes. You might even meet someone nice with yellow teeth, black lungs and foul breath just like yourself! (joke, relax) You can smoke yourself stupid if you want - I just dont want to have to do something I dont want to do. Please dont force me.

It works fine in San Fran, NYC, and here - long may it continue. You'll be fine.

I work in a homeless shelter in Cardiff (we've had the smokin ban in Wales for a month or so now) and I can be personaly fined £2,500 for each and every time someone smokes anywhere in the building out side of their rooms. Of course I can ask them to stop and evict them if they don't but jesus I'm not evicting people for a cigarette!

But this is the latest in a long line of ridiculous legislation.... this one is my personal favourite, taken from my induction training:

Question: "I know people inject on site: am I breaking the law?"

Answer: "No, you are not. While you would commit an offence of knowingly allowing cannabis smoking on site (Section 8(d) of the MDA 1971) this section does not apply to the use of other drugs. according to this it wont affect DMZ/FWD unless either venue is serving food

pubs and clubs which don't serve food don't have a ban.

another way for FWD to avoid it is to create a "members club"

but this is easy, i dont mean make it so that u have 2 be a memeber paying some monthly fee in advance etc

instead, just add 50P on the door and say that is the cost of membership and do u agree to the membership details

We've had this for a while now in NYC and it sucks. It's sort of fun during the summer (there's a reason they scheduled it to take effect at this time of the year) but when it gets fucking freezing and wet out in the winter, it's very very shit. Furthermore, you won't be able to take a drink out with you, so you have to separate the two activities, which is even worse. House parties & squat parties are the way to go... I wish New York had more of that kind of scene... I loved those when I lived in the UK.

The solution is to allow a venue to be licensed for smoking if it's designed so that the bar is non-smoking and separate from the smoking area. So people could light up in the "dancefloor room" and the employees wouldn't get much passive smoke. However that's far too rational for the nanny-statists.

Ya but new ones would then get built that way. And you could re-arrange the setups of some current clubs to move the bar to a different room or whatever. It's not an ideal solution but it's better than a complete ban with no way to compromise.

im hopeful that informal arrangements will develop with certain venues, and the police will allow them... as is the case now with semi-legal rave venues and class a's
