The British probably aren't much better, it's pretty common to try and make yourself understand by saying the same English phrase that had just been misunderstood again but reallllyyyy slowwww and with some finger waving and gesticulations to make the point get across...

1 buck per beer
2 bucks per mixed drink

being generous is a large part of being happy. ever notice how stingy people are always the most miserable people you meet?

i've never waited tables or bartended, but i'm of the philosophy that if you can't throw your server 20%, just stay home and make dinner... or go to a place where you don't have a server. times are hard? it's called a peanut butter and jelly sandwich. i mean there are cases where your server is obviously not going a good job and doesn't care... but those are few and far between.

be generous people. just try it.

Yeah but they've probably managed to get drunk with all the money they saved

Honestly discovering American's think bar staff should be tipped every drink has made me lose a lot of respect for you guys.

why do you tip waiters but think its stupid to tip bar staff? what is it that a waiter does that deserves the tip?

btw ive waited tables on £3.20 an hour so I am certainly not against tipping, just so you know..

if you are an American who has worked in the service industry--or even if you haven't but you're still aware of different minimum wages--and tip less than 18% on a regular basis, you are probably an asshole.

$4.50 an hour + tips from high schoolers whose default coffee order is a frappuccino (note: starbucks made that shit up. never, ever let a "tall," "grande," "venti," or any other starbucks abomination slip in an independent coffee shop) is not a comfortable living. be kind to your servers and you'll get better service.

I'll tip in America obviously due to the wages or whatever.

But it's fucking retarded really. You're not somehow a better person because you pay a dollar more for every drink. It's stupid. Standard service at a bar shouldn't just be tip worthy.

I'll offer a drink to them or tip them if I've been sat at a bar all night and they've been sound as fuck and giving real good service but that's it.

am i a better person because i'm generous? probably. i like to give... charities, bartenders, friends, homeless people... fuck do i need a lot of money for? waste on shit i don't need? as long as rent and bills are paid and a bit is up in the savings...

That's generosity.

Having to tip a bar tender every time just to get any service isn't. It's forced. That's what I object to.

what's forced? do they hold a gun to your head and make you come out of the dollars? if you're not generous, that's that... nobody is forcing anything. :corndance: most restaurant and bar managers will discipline an employee for giving bad service to a non-tipper. it's understood that tips are not to be taken for granted, but if it gets busy and a ton of people are wanting a drink at once... who do you think is gonna get served first? hm..........

Well the way people have described it makes it sound mandatory in a way. People shouldn't do a lousy job because you didn't tip
