EDIT: just checked the specs, 40hz is a pretty terrible cut-off
I understand that in hi-fi terms it (and others in a similar price range) is pretty terrible. But compared to the bass I get out of a £40 logitech system, is it gonna be considerably less because you're paying for hi-fi quality (or not if it's this cheap)?

Hifi shops are like instrument shops... the guys in there know that you don't buy something everytime you go in. Just be friendly, honest about your budget/not knowing much and don't take a CD from the Top 40 that they've been forced to listen to 10 times a day for the last year.

Standard guitar testing rules apply:

Yes, it'll probably be better than the Logitech speakers, but the difference will be so small you'll wanna upgrade again soon. As far as the frequency cutoff goes, use this as a test:

That fourth 808 bass note is 36hz from what I've heard. If it has no punch (or is completely inaudible) then you're probably wasting your money with the sub. Another good test is Rain by Breakage, that bassline is seriously low. If none of that bothers you then go for it, but I really think you'd be better off saving up and going for twice the price in everything

Cheers for the advice. It's something I'm seriously considering, but I'm in two minds about potentially shelling out a lot of money for speakers that I'm not gonna notice much benefit in comparison with the much higher cost.

The main thing that made me consider an upgrade is listening to tunes like VIVEK and other producers with so much focus on the bottom bottom frequencies, it feels like I'm missing out a lot with my crap Logitech speakers. So your point about the frequency response is really relevant.

Oh and, unsurprisingly, my Logitech sub really can't handle that kick  Even my cheap earbuds sound a lot better on that.

edit// But check this, according to the spec on the Logitech, "Frequency response: 35Hz - 20kHz". I'd disagree on the 35Hz part.

try these. if you turn the bass level on your amp up a tad then tracks like goat stare really kick. great for the money

Yeah those spec sheets are full of shit. Like, it can produce down to 35hz but the rolloff after about 55hz ensures that you basically have to have your head resting on the sub to hear it

Thinking of copping something like this: http://www.superfi.co.uk/index.cfm/page ... ct_ID/7065

Along with a basic amp as a first foray into hi-fi world.

Getting two Sony towers for 50 euros next week, not really bothered about the sound quality I bet it's well
good enough. Especially for the money.

Just got a Sherwood amp and 10inch sub to go with my old, unused IMF Electronics monitor speakers:

My first venture into the hi-fi world and I'm loving it, didn't cost me too much either :corndance:

Kicks the shit out of any PC speakers I've ever owned

Bumping this up again because I'm forever needing help with audio.

From what I've gathered, connecting a computer to an amp+speakers isn't as simple as I'd previously thought. Apparently just a computer's line out into an input on an amp isn't very good. Would this sort of thing ( http://www.chemical-records.co.uk/sc/se ... ack=UCA202 ) be what I need to go from usb on the computer, to that, to the red and white inputs on an amp?

Also, quite unrelated, would that Behringer thing allow me to use headphones to mix in a digital DJ software? Because currently, I only have the one audio output going to my computer speakers so there's no output channel for the headphones.

EDIT// also! Does an amp need an output for a sub? Because amps I've been looking at just have red+white (left+right) outputs? Don't quite understand how the sub connects otherwise.

Did a bit of research on this myself a few months back. Best not-expensive, but good quality set up I could find was M-Audio Studiophile AV40's with a Polk PSW10 subwoofer, cost you around £220-250 in total. Spent a month or so of on-off research after my Bose 2.1 system broke (Ironically it stopped working after cranking out Benga but it wasn't a "too loud > blow speakers" issue, they just kind of stopped).
I've yet to buy the Polk subwoofer due to monetary issues but the AV40's are pretty sick for anything above 45Hz, giving you quite accurate audio and a very clean sound up to a decent volume and from as many reviews as I could find, the Polk PSW10 has a suitable output for home audio whether you're producing or just listening. There are more expensive options but... well.. i'm poor. :'(

nah. you run high power speaker cable into it from the left or right from the amp, then from the sub you run cable to one of the speakers.

your second speaker will wire straight to your amp

got to make sure the sub you buy has high power speaker cable inputs and outputs though
