I'm just going on record as saying I don't get what's so confusing or silly about my post... unless this is another jab at conventional brostep or at me mentioning Skrillex and Datsik as examples.

all of the above.... you will eventually figure out that most of the forum members believe that what said artists are doing is nothing new, and arent pushing any boundaries...

we will give them the fact that (most of the time) their productions are very tight (commercial sounding in terms of being clean ie NERO) but besides from that, nothing new has really achieved from that part of the scene for quite sometime....

if you want boundary pushing, look at producers like A made up sound/2562, jacques greene, french fries, floating points ... actually, just look at the house forum (ironic isnt it that the house forum these days is a closer representation of what the orignal sound was all about)

I just realized this. I really admire Skrillex's stature right now. He's headlining a whole new genre and he's doing so well and he just seems like a cool person to be. I wish I was Skrillex. So, I usually try to make music that sounds like Skrillex. But I just realized, Skrillex didn't get to where he is right now by desperately trying to copy his favorite band, KoRn. His previous band From First To Last sort of went that direction, but he got famous from his innovative style. So, instead of trying to copy your idols, try to make music that you really find personal and enjoy.

I see what you're saying. When mentioning commercial artists, I was just merely pointing out that from a production point of view their stuff is really quite impressive, and saying you didn't need to be as production-heavy as them to try and make something new. I completely agree with you though that 'that' side of the genre has really dried up and is getting quite stale.

Despite that I'm not averse to the commercial side and there is still stuff happening here - Sbtrkt's album for instance is certainly quite a crossover sound but for me it's genuinely fresh and and amazing though that's completely different from the heavy artists.

Just saying that you didn't need to have a million different complex basslines to be innovative and you can be melodically interesting and subtle like Skream was on his album or Sbtrkt - I know it's a massive span between those different waves of artists but I was just pointing out that there's probably a better way to be innovative by being musical, instead of what the kids are all trying to do - outfilthing each other, basically.

Sbtrkt is big... sad that his shit songs seems to get airplay on georgefm though haha

No seriously guys I really do have this revelation allowing me to freely use music in my mind.

I finally don't feel uncomfortable making music that's different than my idol's, really.

Its not that no progress has been made by non-"deep" dubs.. Its just not your taste in music so you haven't been following the progress. Basing your opinion entirely on the few mainstream producers everyone knows is pretty ignorant. Most of their stuff IS pretty tired and not a representation of an entire scene.

+1 to this. there is so much good music out there, even if you're only looking at the dubstep (as a really broad category) scene. once you start looking into other genres it gets absolutely outrageous. i can't keep up with all the great shit that's coming out every day. not trying to point fingers or anything, but if you limit yourself to a particular strain of this sound or just a few specific labels or artists, then yeah, this whole scene probably gets pretty boring real quickly. but if you're willing to put in a little extra time and research (even just by following a new blog or two), you'll start to find tons of new, forward-thinking music. great music is always out there, you just have to make yourself available to it. i have so many god damn releases to catch up on right now, what am i doing typing this

Wasn't commenting on the mixdown/mastering that's taking place, more on the fact that it's not sounding particularly innovative...which is what I took the OP to be about.

The thing in my sig is me 3 days ago. I hit this epiphany last night.

I know everyone talks about making your own thing and all that, but just last night it really CLICKED hard in my mind and I really understand it now.

theres more music in the world than dubstep. i dont even play dubstep in my sets unless im asked to specifically, i stick to foamo/jack beats stuff normally, the point being go and find other music thats shithot out there, might even inspire you to create something totally new and innovative

i made something new once...didnt go so well
