the thing is: in a country where a lot of immigrants are also a different race, nativism and racism often go together, and either can be used to try and justify the other, so somebody advocating 1 of them is quite often advocating the other. and it can be difficult to clarify exactly what somebody's views are - irrational hatreds are not going to be entirely consistent.
