I don't like your tone. I'd say Outkast's early work is underrated. Maybe the Love Below is overrated.

People generally agree that Drukqs is poor, right? His most dated sounding work. It's SO 2001.

Yeah but Selected Ambient Works is sooo 90s. Most of Aphex has aged really badly, i'd actually say Drukqs is the only album that still sounds relevant.

The second Ambient Works is pretty timeless sounding, but it's not exactly revolutionary either. Just awesome Eno tunes that aren't by Eno.

The first one has some timeless and dated tunes. I think Drukqs is his least relevant one tbh.

This.

The Love Below is the only one that got more shine that it probably deserved and it was still pretty excellent.

Nobody ever plays the earlier stuff out or on the radio (well not in the UK) and if anyone thinks Stankonia is overrated I will fight them.
Genevieve wrote:Old school hip-hop in general. Pre-1990s. Beat wise but ESPECIALLY lyrically. KRS-One (like, he'll have a good verse when he's surrounded by great MCs, but generally his lyrics are sample and whack as hell. That Nelly diss is shameful), Rakim, Ice Cube, etc, may have been the shit for their time but what Ras Kass, Pharoahe Monch, Tash, Redman or even someone like Eminem is doing (and I ain't even a fan of him) is a lot more lyrically competent and interesting.

It's 2012, I mean, of course heads are gonna be doing something more interesting than what someone in the '80s was doing.
I think it's a bit difficult to call out all of Old School Hip Hop because the lyricism isn't quite there yet. They were finding the genre's feet so the rest could build on it... it's a bit like saying the Sex Pistols are overrated just because Rage Against The Machine happened. Time moves on...

But, the Sex Pistols leads me on to:

PIL - Metal Box

Yes. I fucking went there. Overrated as SHIT. It's alright. Good at best.

I know, that's what I'm saying. Hip-hop was just starting out so obviously the lyricism wasn't on today's level... but most hip-hop heads will refer back to KRS-One and Rakim as THE GREATEST LYRICISTS EVER and modern rappers don't even compare. Then it goes beyond like.. respecting them for what they did and straight up OVERRATING them.

Oh yeah, I totally agree with that. I thought you meant the music itself rather than the rappers seeing as we're talking about albums.

I can only think of a couple of the "golden era" MCs I'd really put in the running for GOAT and even then it's for masses of content with a unique delivery, not actual lyricism - Chuck D's up there - he wouldn't win but he'd be in the race... KRS-One wouldn't even be watching from the stands.

I loved Run DMC's energy, but they could've been rapping about anything tbh. Mainly it was Jay's beats and great hooks... a lot of the appeal of the two up front was simply that they were rappers. It was still a bit of a novelty...

Beasties have always been pretty solid, actually...

Probably his only album I didn't listen to 50 times. I bought it and it just kinda sat there. Someone mentioned the RDJ album, but I love that album. That's one I have listened to beginning to end more times than I can remember. I wouldn't say it's his best, but it's got a certain feel to it.

Anyway Drukqs was the one he released because he accidently left those tracks on a plane or something? Like he figured he'd release them before they leaked, so that's why it was kinda odd/subpar. That's the story anyway, but as with anything he says who knows if it's 0% true or 75% true. Could be where the 'Drukqz = Drug use' thing started haha, maybe he was mashed on that flight and lost it.

Incorrect.

Yeah, they are... people act like they're the punk band, but they were only that huge really because they had Malcolm McClaren doing all their marketing. Also, advertising butter is NOT a good look, Johnny.

Never Mind The Bollocks is still a great album, but it shouldn't be the only proper UK punk album that people ever fucking hear about.

Actually, yeah word. American "hardcore classics", the ones that indie rockers namedrop as classics and follow up with "HARDCORE DIED IN 86". Black Flag, Dead Kennedys, Bad Brains, Minutemen (or SST in general). There's so much good hardcore outside of that and some of the most "innovative" hardcore records came out AFTER 86. Indie rockers are just scared of blastbeats or anything outside of the American-accepted rock tradition.

And yeah like Rossz is a good album, but also kinda cheesy and people hype it up with 'BREAKBEATS WITH CLASSICAL SAMPLES'.. pretty much what hip-hop producers have been doing since the early '90s. And shit, not even the first breakcore artist to do it (and it's been done a lot more subtley too)

Fresh Fruit for Rotting Vegetables kicks ass! And Bad Brains debut is one of my favorite records of all time.

And Black Flag :U:

Oasis suck. Never heard their albums but they seem to be pretty huge across the pond and I can't listen to them without wanting to drown myself.
