In all honesty who even buys cds anymore?

You'd be surprised what you can get on cd in this country Deadly.
Lots of African music is still stuck in the middle ages.
You won't find it on any other medium.

Yea, but I'm thinking more from a major label appeal, not niche or indie label stuff.

vinyl certainly will be around long after CDs being the best analogue medium. CDs are pretty obsolete now

Oh yeah, pretty much any analog medium will trump digital when it comes to collectors/purists. I'm just curious if there are people who are still actually buying cds from the majors with the cost comparison to a download. Just the classic shift of portable music from walkman to cd player to mp3 player should be an indication it's a dying market for major labels.

CDs are starting to look more and more like a transition format tbh. Same quality on digital and no need for people to pay manufacturing costs, warehouse rentals and store fronts. Progress often seems sad until you're living in the future.
Looks like someone's stepped in to take on HMV's debt... this might not be quite curtains...

Last CD I bought was Fanu - Daylightless. 5€ for a double CD off Bandcamp inc. shipping. Came with a free 320mp3 bundle of all the tracks as well.

Yeah, I buy CDs if they're a cool package, or if I can support self-releases for artists I love, etc.

I think a lot of stores are feeling the crunch as physical mediums are becoming redundant and often more expensive be it cds, dvds, books, or even video games. Everything is pretty much becoming digital delivery while the majors are clinging onto now antiquated business models.
The used market helps keep some of these places afloat since it's 100% profit for the stores, but new sales have to have been on a steady downslope. Factor that in with places having too many chains and stuff like the or Game is inevitable.
Seen it plenty of times here in the states as well.

Oh I do the same from time to time, but like I said I'm thinking more of the major labels, not indies or self run stuff with small runs. The stuff you see in the chain stores.

I'd prefer a CD to just a download- hard copy backup, easily lent to friends, easily put on different computers, play in the car and on other CD players without having to plug in a laptop/mp3 player (if there is a connection).
I've still got CD's from the 90's that I doubt I'd still have copies of now if it'd been MP3 files that needed to be transferred with each new computer/OS/player.

I've lost so many amazing tunes over the years because of this, when my laptop died I lost a ridiculous amount of tunes that i'd accumulated
Also I listen to a lot of rock/metal kinda stuff which I tend to buy on CD as I like having a physical product and most metal bands dont really put out vinyl (and even if they did i dont own any turntables)
CDs are still my medium of choice for buying music
willing to bet all this news coverage will help business too...

there are still plenty of people that buy cds it accounts for an enormous market share
not everyone is like me and you, many customers have continually wished me all the best and said they dont know what theyd do without us
the croydon store is profitable but some others arent and i think they will keep it open along with less than 100 others...the top stores basically
all people seem to have done is stick the knife in about hmv being out of date but tell that to the people that need what we offer
not to mention hmv has put loads of cash and time and training into its fast fwd stores of which we are one and has focused on technology (which i put in and run) we sell all manner of future proof products with superior margin to cds and dvds but they arent just going to stop selling anything physical now its "out of date"
thats my view from the inside anyway
this is a private forum that isnt viewable so ill say this...the way the irish stores have been treated is disgusting

Figured some of you guys would have a laugh at this, some of the employees got the password to the @hmvtweets account and instead of changing the password they're just deleting the tweets, but people are retweeting them before hand.
The guy's feed who has been retweeting some gold https://twitter.com/botherer
Some highlights:
RT @HMVtweets There are over 60 of us being fired at once! Mass execution, of loyal employees who love the brand. #hmvXFactorFiring
RT @HMVtweets We're tweeting live from HR where we're all being fired! Exciting!! #hmvXFactorFiring
RT @hmvtweets Just overheard our Marketing Director (he's staying, folks) ask "How do I shut down Twitter?" #hmvXFactorFiring
RT @hmvtweets Under usual circumstances, we'd never dare do such a thing as this. However, when the company you dearly love is being ruined.
RT @hmvtweets and those hard working individuals, who wanted to make hmv great again, have mostly been fired, there seemed no other choice.
RT @hmvtweets Especially since these accounts were set up by an intern (unpaid, technically illegal) two years ago.
RT @hmvtweets So really, what have we to lose? It's been a pleasure folks! Best wishes to you all!

maybe it'll be trendy to release stuff on CD in the future like with the tape thing
