just had a meeting and the guy was kinda vague

I JUST WANT U TO TELL ME WHAT TO DO

he said maybe something on taking a description of analog and try to figure out what it means and look deep into it. so like people say 'gritty' or 'warm' - so he said look into and find out what that means... which sounds confusing and i don't know how to write a title with the words 'warm' or 'gritty' in it  any ideas?

he said ask my m8s what they thought as well and i don't have that many into gear so I'm gonna ask you guys :P

what would you find and interesting topic on the subject of analog/digital? what do you guys think would be a cool hypothesis?

if anyone could give some input id be really grateful

Phigure wrote:IMO the argument that analog is superior for quality reasons is a losing battle. Sure, you technically have a continuous, physical representation of the sound waves, but with digital the resolution is so precise (192 kHz, 24 bit recordings for example), despite being discrete, that any physical imperfections probably alter the sound more than the conversion into 1s and 0s.

I think the more interesting observation to realize is that maybe it's not all about perfection. Look into how the grittiness / warmth comes from coloring the sound through the imperfections of the medium. Tape saturation is highly sought after for a reason, just look at how many plugins there are trying (and failing) to emulate it. Maybe the reason a lot of people are drawn to analog because it isn't a robotic, perfect, cold representation of audio.
yeah thats what my tutor said

i think ill probably go into what makes things 'gritty' or 'warm' and then i can do examples and do people studies which would be good.

hard to think of a title though

Might be cool to pirate a bunch of tape saturation plugins, buy a tape recorder and a few different types of cassettes, and then have people do blind tests where they rate which of them they like best. Also maybe look at the spectrogram before and after and see if you can spot differences in actual tape vs plugins, etc

And yeah I don't know I'm shit at titles too, just leave it til the end (unless you have to have one already?)

BTW I honestly believe that analogue sybths have a more multi layered sound than a plug in or digi synth. As in, it proper feels as if there is a greater depth to the sound. Not sure why this is
I guess its the added harmonics

Definitely. Also analog oscillators drift slightly in their pitch and phasing which also adds to the sound

talk about uncanny valley, why piano emulators kind of sound a bit like pianos but actually theyre a bit horrible
digital is just a slightly too perfect attempt to try and recreate analogue, but in being more perfect, it's actually a bit creepy, cos perfect isnt natural

yeah never heard of that uncanny valley. thats pretty cool shit man, nice one :W:
