just wondering what mental states everyones in when they produce?
i used to think i couldnt write without being stoned, but these days i dont smoke at all and dont think i could even get to grips with a track if i was lean.
i also noticed when i was stoned i couldnt go back to a track i'd produced while lean and get the vybe......
i'd literally have a lil listen think fuck this and start a new project.........
sorry shit thread but 90% of stuff going on in here is complete and utter bullshit thesedays can we go bk to 07/08 please??????
on another note i think redbull and orange lucozade are my drugs of choice
definitely redbull if on a morning session

I refuse to produce if I'm lifted. I will drink and write a beat for as long as my attention stays on that. After a while I just wanna listen to other tunes that aren't mine lol.

Absolutly out my box stoned!!!
Smoke at least a 10 bag every session!!
Nothing like smoking a j and vibing a tune so much that you keep it unlit in you gob for 30 mins then realise and spark it, take a puff and let it go out again.
Shit went off on one there a bit.....
must be the weed!!!

It depends on what drugs do intend your target audience to be on?

I have to add just do what you feel i like to produces when ever, just fucking vibe it.
I dont do any other drugs so when i go out i am normally the most sober there, maybe that why i get fucked when i make tracks hahaha
Beer is the biggest mistake in the studio, pissed = lazy imo and clumsy!!
but then again i been found in teh studio at 9am with a beer so i'm afine one to talk!!!

Almost always completely sober. Sometimes caffeine helps. Basically I try not to get fucked up till after I finish a tune and am listening to it.

Personally I produce sober, or have a few beers to get the ideas flowing (although I recently quit drinking so yea sober).
If you tried to produce on pills you'd just have a kick drum and snare going and that would be enough to get you raving, wouldn't really work

i get more done sober, but come up with great patches and such when fucked up.
sequencing/tracking fucked up generally ends up with shit for me.

honestly i plan to smoke but i forget to keep hitting it once i start working. i'll remember i was smoking after i'm usually done for the night....right around the time i'm giving the amount of work i just did a once-over listen before I'm super done for the night.

Well, i tried quitting marijuanna about 2 weeks ago. I went about 5 days, during that time i wanted to produce but couldnt bring myself work on any tracks or start any new ones for even longer then 5 minutes. then after 5 days i said fuck it and picked up 2 grams of skunk and smoked small ammounts while conserving it for 3 days while doing nothing but work on and perfect 1 track

it allowed to me to literally stay focus'd and interested for hours..
however i do want to quit, or at least get my tollerance down,
and hope if i quit long enough i will be able to stay this interested while sober

very interesting topic actually. even though it's a simple question the way that people answer speaks volumes about their attitude towards music.
i play piano and love scratching (turntables) so when i sometimes do this i used to be stoned as it helped me get into another frame of mind. when playing an instrument it's actually a lot more organic and you therefore flow a lot more with it, but at the end of the day music still obeys rules and you generally have to follow these rules if you want to make something that sounds good. i used to record myself playing keys over a beat for about an hour and maybe i'd get a couple of cool bars. being in a drug induced state helps open your mind to patterns that you normally wouldn't think of but it does not increase your technical ability.
that being said if you need drugs to expand your mind and "think outside the box" (in regards to forming musical ideas) you should really start learning more about music and music theory.
when it comes to actual sit-down musical production i don't think that drugs are a good idea at all. the reason being is that a lot of electronic music is pattern based. and you are a lot more likely to be satisfied with creating patterns that are not up to scratch. this has been the case of electronic music for the past 20 years.
go on the internet and listen to tracks on any website for any genre. 99% of them are mediocre at best. that is because people are happy pumping out sub-standard productions, and a lot of the time that has to do with their own state of mind when producing.
i don't mind people smoking and i love weed myself but i hate people who define themselves by the drugs they take. what i hate even more are people who deny that cannabis is harmful to you and even go as far as to say that it can be beneficial. that is honestly really laughable and a lot of those people who think that are those stoner arty type wankers who are happy to put out any bullshit out and then collectively jerk each other off.
drugs are killing music.

that sounds like you have some sort of attention disorder. it's not a good idea to self medicate yourself. go see a doctor or something. i'm being serious.
